Save the MBTA Commuter Boat

Save the MBTA Commuter Boat On January 3rd, the MBTA unveiled its proposal to close a $161 million hole in its budget by hiking fares and making cuts in service.

The MBTA’s proposal would include shutting down commuter rail service on weekends and hiking commuter rail fares by upwards of 43%. The proposal would also completely eliminate the $3.9M subsidy for the MBTA commuter boat. The elimination of the MBTA ferry would drastically effect the commutes of many of my constituents, forcing them to completely reconfigure their daily schedules in order to find

a different way to commute to Boston. In contrast to many other services offered by the MBTA, the commuter boat always runs on time and is a very pleasant and environmentally sound commuting experience. Any proposed changes to the MBTA’s rate and service structure will not go into effect until July 1, 2012, and there will be several public hearings before that time where residents can weigh in on the proposals. I plan to advocate very strongly on behalf of the commuter boat throughout the process. Please join this page for regular updates on the proposals and to contribute your own thoughts and opinions. Update from Senator Bob Hedlund via State House News Service:

WEEKEND MBTA BOAT SERVICE GAINING IN POPULARITY

Weekend commuter boat service, which will be available through Columbus Day weekend, is gaining in popularity. The MBTA reported Tuesday morning that 3,662 people used the boats over the July 5-6 weekend, which was the busiest since weekend service between Hingham, Hull, Georges Island and Boston was launched seven weeks ago. The weekend boats have drawn nearly 18,000 customers for an average of 1,272 per weekend day, and ridership topped 2,000 on a single day for the first time last Saturday when 2,128 people used the boats.

“We are very pleased that summer travelers have chosen this convenient and affordable way to get in and out of Boston or visit Georges Island,” said MBTA General Manager Beverly Scott said in a statement. “More and more people are avoiding the hassle of driving and parking, and enjoying a stress-free boat ride into the city.”

Each Saturday and Sunday, there are 14 round trips between Hingham and Boston’s Long Wharf, according to the T, with a number of boats making stops at Hull, Georges Island, and Logan Airport. Boats depart hourly from Hingham and Boston, beginning at 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., respectively. On Saturdays, there are two additional round-trips at night with the last boat departing Boston at 11:15 p.m., and arriving in Hingham at midnight.

A one-way fare between Hingham or Hull and Long Wharf is $8. The fare for Logan service is $16, but $8 for those with a valid monthly commuter boat pass.
