Chicago to the Gulf Part 2
10/14/26 Chillicothe to Havana
From our sailing lessons in January, “the most dangerous thing on Boat is a schedule.”
Every time we put together a plan, we can’t allow for how much the weather will impact us. How long will it take to get through a lock? The water level is too low. We can do the mileage calculations. We can do the fuel calculations. But even that is dependent on the river flow and wind. We hopped in a rental car at 5am. We were packed the previous night. We drove to Chillicothe IL and unloaded our provisions. Hopped back in the car to return it to the Peoria airport, where we took a Lyft back to the marina. Plans going well!! We started down the Illinois river and made great time getting to the marina just before dark. It was an overcast day. We called the marina earlier in the day to confirm availability, and if they had deep enough water to accommodate us. They said we were good. Just as we turned to go into the entrance of the Marina, we got stuck. We are blocking the entire entrance channel. We were hoping for an easy uneventful day. I called the Marina to let them know we had a problem. She said we could just stay there for the night nobody was leaving. 😂 I called our Tow insurance and nobody in the area. We had to find our own tow and get reimbursed. So frustrating! After many attempts, we were able to get Free from the mud. YAY! It was fully dark by then. BOO! Thankfully there was another nearby Anchorage off the main channel. It wasn’t ideal, but it was better than nothing. The next Anchorage was an hour and a half down the river. Anchoring for a larger boat is not something to take lightly. The Anchorage channel was very narrow and we did not want to ground the boat again. We were very lucky to get it out of the mud earlier. With our wing shaped keel it’s nearly impossible. Regardless, a series of going forward, dropping the anchor, then motoring in reverse to avoid all the chain dropping in one pile. Letting out the appropriate amount of chain for the depth of the water. Then setting the anchor. I was so glad when we were done. It was dark and I was tired.
