If you’re hauling September 4–7, a few extra checks can help protect the load:

📍 Confirm pickup and delivery hours
🔒 Use secured, well-lit parking when possible
🚛 Avoid leaving a loaded trailer unattended
📲 Double-check unexpected changes to load instructions

Security experts also recommend driving about 200 miles after pickup before making your first stop, when possible. Thieves may follow trucks from pickup locations and wait for the first opportunity to target the load.

If something about the pickup, delivery or load instructions changes unexpectedly, verify it before moving forward.

🚨 TRUCKING ALERT: Hawk Fire near Reno, Nevada

Drivers running through Reno, the North Valleys and Washoe County should check current road conditions before heading into the area.

The Hawk Fire has burned more than 15,000 acres and was 27% contained as of the latest update. Some evacuation zones and roads have reopened, but conditions remain active and restrictions can change quickly.

If you have a pickup, delivery or route through the Reno area:
🔸 Check your route before departure
🔸 Watch for active road closures and restrictions
🔸 Allow extra time for possible rerouting or delays
🔸 Stay clear of restricted areas and emergency operations

🚨 Brake Safety Week starts August 23.

From Aug. 23–29, inspectors across the U.S., Canada and Mexico will increase commercial vehicle brake inspections, with extra attention on brake drums and rotors.

Last year:
🔸15,175 trucks inspected
🔸2,296 placed OOS for brake violations
🔸That’s a 15.1% brake-related OOS rate

⚠️ Before hitting the road, pay extra attention to drums, rotors and the full brake system during your pre-trip. Cracks, broken components, severe rust, excessive wear or other critical brake defects can put the truck out of service until repairs are completed.

Recent enforcement operations across the U.S. and Canada found:�

• New Mexico: 20 trucks + 7 drivers OOS after 153 inspections�
• Ontario: 16 of 25 inspected trucks OOS — 64%�
• Violations included brakes, false logs, ELDs, load securement, overweight vehicles and lane restrictions.�

The trailer held during the tug test. Good – but the inspection isn’t finished ⚠️

A tug test cannot show you what is happening inside the fifth wheel. Before you roll, get out and visually confirm:

🔸 No gap between the trailer and fifth wheel�
🔸 Locking jaws fully secured around the kingpin�
🔸 Release arm and safety latch in the locked position

U.S. trucking capacity continues to tighten.

Here’s what the July data shows:
↘️ Capacity Index: 30.8 → 28.4
Fewer trucks and carriers are available in the market.
↗️ Contract rates: +18% YoY
Contract truckload rates remain well above last year’s level.
☑️ Spot rates: −7.5% MoM
The spot market softened in July, so tighter capacity has not yet resulted in immediate rate growth.

What does this mean for drivers?

With fewer trucks competing for freight, we may have an easier time finding loads and more leverage when negotiating rates.

For company drivers, this could mean steadier load flow, more consistent miles, and less waiting between loads.

Owner-operators may also see better spot-rate opportunities as peak season approaches. However, spot rates were still down 7.5% in July, so these changes are not immediate or guaranteed.
