I just finished reading Hard Miles once again. And as usual, after reading my own books, something struck me in a way I hadn't expected.
When I wrote this book, I combined extensive research with my own experiences, observations, and convictions about the cargo van and last-mile transportation business. I wrote it because I couldn't find a single book that honestly explained what it really takes to succeed in this industry.
Looking back now, after everything I've experienced building VLM Xpress, I can say this with complete confidence: "Reality has validated the book."
Time after time, I have lived the very situations I described. The challenges, the financial pressures, the pricing mistakes, the operational decisions, the opportunities, the mindset required—they all unfolded exactly as I had anticipated.
That realization has given me even greater confidence in the value of what Hard Miles offers.
Ironically, if this book had existed before I entered the business, I would have bought it without hesitation. It would have saved me countless hours, costly mistakes, and unnecessary frustration. But it didn't exist. That is precisely why I wrote it.
What has been even more rewarding is seeing how the principles in the book continue to shape my decisions today. Many of the opportunities that have come my way were recognized because I learned to see the business through the framework I developed while writing Hard Miles.
This isn't a book written from the sidelines.
It was born from research, refined by experience, and continually confirmed in the field.
If you're thinking about entering the cargo van business—or if you're already operating in last-mile transportation and want to understand the business beyond simply accepting loads—I believe Hard Miles will change the way you look at this industry.
Sometimes the greatest value of a book is not that it tells you what to do.
It's that it teaches you how to think—so when the moment comes, you're already prepared.
