In 2019, about 1 in 10 professional truck drivers was a woman. Today, that number tells a fuller story.

According to the Women In Trucking Index, the share of women holding a CDL and driving heavy-duty trucks stood at roughly 10% in 2019, climbed to a peak of 13.7% in 2022, and settled at 12.1% in 2023 - still well above where the industry started. Researchers point to limited access to childcare on the road, safety concerns, and a wave of retirements among longtime drivers as reasons behind the recent dip.

Real progress in trucking rarely moves in a straight line, and this is what it looks like: more women behind the wheel than five years ago, running their own routes, hauling freight across the country, and earning their place in an industry built on skill and discipline.
