I recently discovered some mildly upsetting information about what some people are calling a “major overhaul “.
Apparently there are shops out there that believe as long as a component is within “service limits” it’s ok to use it in a major overhaul. So for the sake of argument, let’s say the piston to cylinder service limits are .0020-.0040, and they measure at .0039. This individual thinks it’s ok to throw a quick hone in it, replace the rings and use it in a major overhaul, and make a log entry that say 0 SMOH . That cylinder will be out of spec in 100 hours, and require a top overhaul. Please be sure when you get an overhaul the engine builder sets all your clearances at factory new specs, and don’t listen to these yahoo’s that think this is ok, your life may depend on it
