🌿 Meet Nature’s Nighttime Clean-Up Crew: The Opossum 🌿

If you spot an opossum wandering through your yard at night — don’t panic! These shy, gentle creatures might look a little spooky in the dark, but they’re actually doing incredible work for your backyard and the planet. 🐾✨

Here’s why opossums deserve your love (not fear):

✅ Rabies? Almost never! Their body temperature is too low for the virus to survive, which means they’re far less likely to carry rabies than other wild animals.

✅ Tick Terminators. An opossum can eat thousands of ticks in a season, helping reduce the spread of Lyme disease and other dangerous illnesses.

✅ Nature’s Janitors. They happily clean up what others leave behind — from rotten fruit and fallen leftovers to dead animals and waste.

And about those scary teeth and hisses? 👀 Don’t worry. That’s just a bluff to look tough. When truly threatened, opossums prefer to “play dead” rather than fight.

🌍 These misunderstood little marsupials are essential to a healthy ecosystem. So next time you see one, remember: it’s working for free to keep your yard — and our planet — cleaner and healthier. 💚

GREAT NEWS!! 👏

Yesterday, Aug. 15, the Parkway reopened from milepost 221.8 to 229.7, south of the North Carolina/Virginia state line. Opening this road section signifies the completion of both a long-planned bridge maintenance project and a Helene recovery project due a landslide at milepost 224.9.

This eight-mile section restores continuous access to over 20 miles of the park from the NC/VA state line to Doughton Park, including access to Doughton Park campground and The Bluffs restaurant. This opening is another in an initial round of recovery projects underway across the Parkway in North Carlina to address multiple landslides that occurred on the Parkway as a result of Hurricane Helene. Once this first round of projects is complete, across the summer and into the fall of 2025, over 50 miles of the Parkway will be restored for public use in various locations across western North Carolina.

The park is prioritizing restoring road access through a phased system to provide both public access to newly opened areas as soon as possible, and access to previously unreachable areas by contractors. Parkway construction activity is complex and highly technical, including factors such as remoteness, challenging terrain, and reduced construction seasons due to ice and winter weather at higher elevations.

For safety reasons, the park asks that people continue to be patient and respect remaining closures. Multiple seen and unseen hazards exist in closed areas, and crews and heavy equipment at work make areas unsafe. Visitors should also be aware that trail assessments are also still underway, and caution should be exercised as hikers may encounter hazards on trails such as landslides, tree debris, and washed-out sections or bridges.

Visitors should plan carefully for any trip along the Parkway and consult the park’s website for a wide variety of planning tools.

🌼 Denmark’s Floating Islands — Nature’s Comeback in the Heart of the City 🌿🌊

In the harbors of Copenhagen, something extraordinary is quietly blooming. 🌺 Tiny floating islands covered in wildflowers are turning industrial waterways into thriving sanctuaries for birds, bees, and butterflies. 🐝🦋🐦

Built using eco-friendly materials, these green oases mimic natural habitats — offering shelter, food, and nesting space in places where nature once struggled to exist.

💡 The result?
✔️ More pollinators in the city
✔️ Healthier urban waters
✔️ Biodiversity woven into design

It’s a beautiful example of eco-innovation, showing how cities don’t have to push nature away — they can invite it back, creatively and sustainably.

🌍 When nature floats, life follows.

✨ One flower-filled island at a time, Denmark is building a greener, more hopeful urban future.
