Big Bear Airport

History of the Big Bear Airport Only a few years went by before pilots realized the opportunities this opened up for quickly traveling to Big Bear.

Bush Pilots In Big Bear As Early As 1919

Waldo Waterman landed his Thomas-Morse Scout with 110-horsepower
rotary engine in a dirt field at Shay Meadow in 1919. A field was graded for landing and many pilots followed. Because of Mr. Watermans passion for flying in and out of the picturesque forests of Big Bear, he was able to get a dirt landing strip. This occurred in 1924 and existed for years in

private ownership surrounded by the Peter Pan Club golf course. By 1969 the Airport became eligible for FAA funds.

2011 Paved The Way For A Smooth Approach

Today the Airport is a modern, well-maintained facility here to serve the entire community. The District is governed by a five member Board of Directors elected by the public. There are some 200 aircraft based at the Big Bear Airport. The Airport is a popular stop for transient aircraft, second homeowners and valley visitors, transporting visitors and business people into and out of the Valley. The Airport is a staging point for: Medevac services, Sheriffs, CHP, and fire fighting efforts of the US Forest Service and the California Department of Forestry. It is also home to the Civil Air Patrol. There is one restaurant located at the Airport; it’s a great place to dine and watch the airplanes come and go.

At approximately 6:20 p.m. last night, August 27, there was an incident involving a single-engine aircraft just east of the Airport. The FAA is investigating, and Big Bear Airport staff do not have any further information at this time.

We had a not-so-common visitor on the ramp today. Meet the TURBINE THRUSH—the workhorse of the skies.

While most airplanes carry people, the Turbine Thrush helps feed the world. Designed for agricultural aviation, these rugged aircraft apply seed, fertilizer, and crop protection products with incredible precision, helping farmers care for thousands of acres efficiently. It's one of aviation's hardest-working aircraft, making a difference one flight at a time.

A temporary runway closure is scheduled for Monday, June 1, 2026 7am through Saturday, June 6, 2026 6pm, for an FAA-funded Runway Rehabilitation Project.
Work will include:
• Crack sealing
• Fog sealing
• Re-striping of the runway, taxiways, hangar rows, and aprons (including transient parking)
Both runways (08 & 26) will be closed to all air traffic during this time, however three (3) our of six (6) helipads will be open at all times for emergency services. Hangar access will be limited.
Please plan accordingly and check NOTAMs prior to all operations. We appreciate your patience as we complete these important improvements to enhance safety and extend the life of our airfield. For any questions or concern, contact the office at 909-585-3219.

We were thrilled to welcome a Cirrus group fly-in today - featuring a stunning lineup of NINETEEN (19) SR20 and SR22 aircraft.

UPDATE: THE AWOS IS BACK IN SERVICE!

Attention pilots and airport users: The Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS) will be out of service beginning Monday, April 20 at 8:00 AM through Friday, April 24 at 5:00 PM.

A NOTAM will be in effect during this time. Please obtain weather information from alternative sources and exercise appropriate caution when planning arrivals and departures.

We appreciate your understanding as we complete this work and will provide updates if the timeline changes.

Big Bear Airport Terminal update: exterior siding is done, windows are shining bright, interior walls are progressing nicely, and the roof is watertight. Great momentum here in the new year!

Update on Big Bear Airport Terminal Building: Steel frame is up, purlins are installed, and wooden trusses are being added. Construction is progressing according to plan.
