Fantastic few days of nothing but tracking!

Started off Friday running test lines and judging for the American Blood Trackers Association. Congrats to those who were successful in earning their started level certification.

Saturday was all about learning. Began the morning with running individual lines, followed by several interactive stations including K9 first aid, arrow reading, Garmin introduction, record keeping, and scent drills utilizing handlers and their dogs. This is a learning event for all. No one is a professional, no one is superior. It's all about furthering your education and gaining experience.

Thanks to all of those who attended, put up with some of my rambling, and gave their full attention and participated to make this what I believe was a successful work shop!

The MDTN considers the following when admitting new members:

3 years tracking for the public

Tracker density in your area (county)

Expect new members to achieve 90 tracks within 3 seasons as a new member

This past weekend was nothing other than exceptional! I was able to get together with trackers from around the state of Michigan and do some awesome training. Training together brings out new ideas, different outlooks to situations, input from more experienced trackers, and comradary. It builds us as a team, and builds the tracking community!

ONE BUCK TAG....YAY OR NAY!?

As of recent, social media is blowing up with a multitude of opinions regarding whether Michigan should go to a 1 buck tag rule or not. There are several ways in which a hunter can look at this.

I'm neither for or against the change, I can see both sides. I've harvested on 2 occasions in my 25 years of hunting 2 bucks. Not everyone has the opportunity, but we do have the opportunity to choose what buck we kill if we have 1 tag.

For the NW counties who have been participating in the 3pt APR for many of years, we are used to passing the small bucks and I don't see a dramatic change. For others in the state, this is a big change requiring them to pass the spikes and 4 pointers they may shoot first and hunt for a bigger buck the rest of the season.

What's your take? Is it an over reach to tell people what they can harvest? We have size limits for many of fish in the state is this the same? Legitimate conversations welcome!
