Since October 1969, FISH has been a strength and support to the troubled and needy in this county. With and through the local churches, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, the Department of Social Services, and the generous

gifts of county citizens, FISH has brought people and families through countless crises and situations. FISH has no overhead except for a monthly phone bill. Volunteers receive calls for help in their homes hooked up to the FISH number, 955-1823. Our volunteers provide transportation to doctors, clinics, and grocery stores using their own vehicles and at their own expense. Long distance drivers can take patients to Charlottesville, Washington, Baltimore, and Fairfax. Our faithful counselors interview applicants for financial assistance so that we might give both wisely and with compassion. Wonderful volunteers also man our Clothing and Food Banks. Our policy is to help without causing dependency. The fish symbol represents Christ, and may well be one of the most familiar of Christian symbols. The first letters of the five Greek words for Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior, form the Greek word for fish. This appeal for volunteers is being sent to each church in Clarke County. Many Clarke County citizens have volunteered for FISH over the years. We are seeking “new blood” and enthusiastic support for this successful program of neighbors helping neighbors.
