Berea Home Village

Berea Home Village Not for profit organization with a mission to enhance the lives of older Bereans living at home This becomes challenging and often impractical, as we age.

It's really true that there's no place like home, and for those of us who call Berea home, there is a deep and abiding affection for this special community. Many of us desire to stay rooted in Berea for the rest of our lives. Berea Home Village offers people an affordable option for staying in their own homes when transportation and household chores become difficult - the point at which many older

people have to leave their familiar surroundings. This innovative solution is perfect for those who wish to remain active, independent, and socially connected to their community. Villages are unique, locally determined communities where members can stay in their homes as long as possible. Members can be homeowners, renters, people sharing housing, or living with family. Members are supported by a network of caring volunteers who are trained. Members are supported by village recommended paid service providers. Membership is affordable ($300 per year/individual and $500 per year/household) and provides a social community, as well as practical services to meet changing needs. Some of the Member Services include:
Transportation to appointments and events
Assistance with errands
Phone check-in calls
Home safety/fall risk/emergency preparedness review
Limited technical assistance with computer, phone, television
Health and in-home care assessment
Social activities that are accessible and enriching

Last week was a blast as we celebrated the August concerts of the Music & Meaning series!
The Back to School Bash brought families together for an evening full of music, movement, creativity, and fun. Kids enjoyed a free meal from Berea Kids Eat, cooled off during a foam party, participated in art activities, picked up free school supplies, and danced along to the family-friendly hip-hop of Secret Agent 23 Skidoo. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the start of a new school year while giving children and families a chance to connect, play, and enjoy time together.
Saturday brought a different, but equally special, experience as we gathered on the front lawn of the hospital for performances by Jewelweed and The Local Honeys. Friends, families, and neighbors spread out across the lawn for live music and community, bringing our August concerts to a close.
Throughout the Music & Meaning series, we've seen how music and the arts can create opportunities for connection across generations. Whether dancing in a foam party, creating art, sharing a meal, listening to music on the lawn, or simply catching up with a neighbor, these shared experiences help strengthen relationships and create a greater sense of belonging in the community.
Through participant surveys, we are continuing to learn more about how these events support social connection and well-being, particularly for older Bereans who may experience loneliness or social isolation. Thank you to everyone who has taken a few minutes to share your experiences with us, your feedback helps us understand the impact of this work and shape future opportunities for connection.
A heartfelt thank you to AMP Berea, Secret Agent 23 Skidoo, Jewelweed, The Local Honeys, Erica Chambers Photography, Berea Kids Eat, Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen, Amethyst Forest, Berea College, the Levitt Foundation, our volunteers, community partners, and everyone who attended. It truly takes a community to create experiences like these.

This past weekend was filled with beauty, joy, creativity, and authentic self-expression.
On Saturday, we celebrated Independence Day at the Berea Farmers Market with an incredible performance by River Shook. Visitors enjoyed shopping from local farmers and artisans while creating colorful ribbon wands and connecting with neighbors through music and community.
On Sunday, we joined the Interdependence Art Parade, where the Panorama Brass Band traveled all the way from New Orleans to fill Berea's streets with energy and music. The day featured community-created art, storytelling, puppetry, and opportunities for people of all ages to participate, create, and celebrate together.
These events are part of the Music & Meaning concert series, which explores how arts and community engagement strengthen social connection and support well-being. Through participant surveys, we are learning how these shared experiences help reduce loneliness, foster belonging, and build stronger connections, particularly among older Bereans who may experience social isolation. Your feedback helps us measure the impact of these events and continue creating meaningful opportunities for our community to come together.
A heartfelt thank you to AMP Berea, Berea Farmers Market, River Shook, Panorama Brass Band, Clear Creek Creative, The Year of Mud, Fire & Fern Glass Studio, Erica Chambers Photography, Rebel Rebel Studio & Lounge, Grow Appalachia, Berea Kids Eat, Berea College, the Levitt Family Foundation, our volunteers, community partners, and everyone who attended. It truly takes a community to create experiences like these.

Thank you for making this weekend so memorable. We can't wait to see you at the next Music & Meaning concert in August!
