How to Get a Quieter Hotel Room: Simple Tips for a Better Night’s Sleep

Vacations are supposed to be relaxing, right?

After a wonderful day of sightseeing, exploring a new city, relaxing on the beach, or enjoying a resort, there’s nothing better than returning to your hotel room for a peaceful night’s sleep. Unfortunately, not every hotel room is created equal when it comes to peace and quiet.

An elevator chiming throughout the night, guests talking outside your door, housekeeping carts rolling down the hallway, or music coming from the pool can quickly turn a relaxing getaway into a sleepless vacation.

The good news? A little planning can improve your chances of getting a quieter room.

Are Certain Hotel Room Numbers Noisier?

You may have heard the travel tip that rooms ending in -01 or -02 should be avoided because they are often located near elevators.

There may be some truth to this at certain hotels, but it is definitely not a universal rule.

Hotels and resorts have completely different floor plans. Some have long hallways with elevators in the center, while others have multiple wings, towers, courtyards, villas, or separate buildings.

Instead of focusing on a particular room number, focus on where your room is located within the property.

Know the Hotel Before You Go

Many hotels do not publish detailed floor plans online, so determining exactly where a particular room is located can be difficult.

Before booking, read recent guest reviews on sites such as Google Reviews, TripAdvisor, Booking.com, or Expedia. Search reviews for words such as:

* Noise
* Quiet
* Elevator
* Street noise
* Pool
* Construction
* Thin walls
* Connecting room

For travelers who place a high priority on peace and quiet, smaller resorts or properties with accommodations spread among individual villas, cottages, bungalows, or lodges may also be worth considering.

Disney travelers have another useful resource. TouringPlans provides detailed information about many Disney resort rooms, including location, views, and room-related information that can help travelers make a more informed choice.

Take a Virtual Look Around

Before choosing your hotel, consider using Google Maps and Street View to explore the surrounding area.

Look for potential noise sources near the property, including busy highways, nightlife districts, restaurants and bars that stay open late, construction projects, loading areas, and other commercial properties.

At a beach resort, you may love the idea of overlooking the pool—but remember that pools can also mean music, activities, children playing, and conversations continuing into the evening.

Sometimes the prettiest view isn’t necessarily the quietest room.

Make Your Quiet-Room Request Before You Arrive

Once your reservation is confirmed, consider contacting the hotel directly two or three days before arrival.

Politely explain that you are a light sleeper and would appreciate a quiet room, if available.

You can request a room:

* Away from elevators and stairwells
* Away from ice and vending machines
* Away from housekeeping and service closets
* Away from the pool or entertainment areas
* Away from busy streets
* On a higher floor, when appropriate
* Facing an interior courtyard rather than a busy roadway

Requests are never guaranteed, but communicating your preferences gives the hotel an opportunity to help.

Don’t Forget About Connecting Rooms

Connecting rooms can be wonderful for families and groups traveling together, but they aren’t always ideal for light sleepers.

The interior connecting door may allow more sound to travel between rooms than a solid hotel wall.

If you don’t need a connecting room, consider requesting a non-connecting room when quiet is especially important to you.

Your First Room Doesn’t Have to Be Your Final Room

When you arrive, take a few minutes to evaluate your room.

Listen for elevator noise, street traffic, nearby construction, pool activity, adjoining-room noise, or heavy foot traffic in the hallway.

If the location doesn’t work for you, politely ask the front desk whether another room is available.

Travel tip: Arriving earlier in the hotel’s normal check-in period may give you more alternatives than waiting until late in the evening, although availability will always depend on occupancy.

Pack a Backup Plan for Better Sleep

Even with careful planning, no hotel can guarantee complete silence.

If you’re a light sleeper, consider adding a few small items to your packing list.

Comfortable sleeping earplugs can make a significant difference. Look for products designed specifically for sleeping and check the manufacturer’s noise-reduction information.

A portable white-noise machine is another useful travel companion. White noise can help mask intermittent sounds such as hallway conversations, doors closing, elevators, or traffic.

Don’t have a sound machine? Sometimes the steady sound of a hotel-room fan or air-conditioning system can provide enough background noise to help.

A Little Planning Can Make a Big Difference

Your hotel room is more than simply a place to leave your suitcase. It’s where you recharge for the next day’s adventures.

When choosing accommodations, I encourage my clients to think beyond price and photographs. Location within the hotel, surrounding activity, room configuration, and personal sleep preferences can all influence your overall vacation experience.

And remember: special room requests are requests rather than guarantees, but asking politely and communicating your preferences in advance can certainly improve your chances of getting the peaceful retreat you were hoping for.
