Porto! Oh man, did I underestimate you.

Yes, I’ve been to Portugal before. I send clients here all the time. But this was my first time really seeing Porto, wandering its streets, getting lost in its neighborhoods, and completely falling in love.

You are what happens when San Francisco, Boston, and Edinburgh have a baby.

You have San Francisco’s dramatic hills and waterfront views, Boston’s historic charm and walkable neighborhoods, and Edinburgh’s moody beauty, colorful architecture, and old-world soul. Yet somehow, you’re entirely your own thing.

Consider this my official apology, Porto. I should have fallen for you much sooner.

Built as a hunting lodge in 1869, Marriott Mena House has expanded and transformed over the following decades, and is now one of the most historically rich hotel experiences in the world. Winston Churchill, Agatha Christie, and heads of state have all been guests.

The position at the foot of the Giza Plateau means early morning access to the site before the crowds arrive. A private sunrise at the Great Pyramid is one of the more reliable ways to shift how someone thinks about travel entirely.
