I'm really excited to have Belmont Boatworks be invited to be part of another really cool community project. I've been problem solving and scheming with the Penobscot Maritime Museum and the City of Gouldboro, ME on what's next for "Big Jim," the iconic sign that welcomed folks to Maine all through the 70s, 80s, and 90s. The goal is to move Big Jim from his current location on Gouldsboro Harbor on the Gulf of Maine to Belmont, where we can help the museums sign painters return him back to his original glory. The plan is to erect him on the front lawn of the museum for a year when the restoration is complete. The processing facility where he has stood pinned to the granite since the early 2000s is in a permit application process for rezoning and revitilization. We would be returning Big Jim back to the site when the museum has had a turn with him.
I see this as a really fun side project that Henry Miller and I could really sink our teeth into. The project is in early development, but expect to hear more.
Here's a little more info on Big Jim himself. https://downeast.com/our-towns/whats-next-for-maines-iconic-big-jim/
