🚛 IN CASE YOU MISSED THIS WEEK’S CLASS…

This week’s class was about a WHOLE lot more than finding a load!

We talked about the business side of trucking that can make the difference between “I got a load!” and “Wait… where did all my money go?” 😂

A few of the big takeaways:

📋 Read before you sign.
Carrier packets and rate confirmations can contain important details about rates, times, requirements, and penalties.

⚖️ Know your weight.
Don't blindly trust the number you're given. Scaling and knowing what you're actually hauling matters.

💰 Know your numbers.
Before you accept a load, you need to understand your expenses and what you actually have to make just to break even.

🔎 Vet your brokers.
We talked about checking broker information and watching for red flags before putting your truck and time on the line.

📸 Document EVERYTHING.
Photos, BOLs, arrival and unloading times, and good records can make a big difference when there's a disagreement about freight, detention, damage, or payment.

💵 Understand factoring.
Reserves, fees, chargebacks, contract terms, and termination fees can all affect your cash flow. Know what you're signing.

🛡️ Stay on top of compliance.
Safety audits, ELD records, plates, driver files, and all those little details don't become important only when someone comes knocking. They're part of running the business every day.

And one of the biggest reminders from this week's class:

You aren't just driving a truck. You're running a business.

🚛 THIS WEEK'S CLASS WAS ABOUT MORE THAN FINDING LOADS!

If you think running a trucking company is mostly about finding freight and driving the truck…

There's a WHOLE LOT more to it. 😅

This week's class covered some of the stuff that happens behind the windshield — the business side that can make or break a trucking operation.

We talked about:

📋 Keeping your paperwork organized
Truck books, digital files, rate confirmations, BOLs, fuel receipts, maintenance records, compliance documents… all those things you don't think about until somebody asks for one RIGHT NOW.

💰 Knowing your numbers
Your rate per mile isn't the same thing as profit. You have to know what it actually costs to operate your truck.

🛡️ Understanding your insurance
Auto liability, physical damage, cargo, general liability, trailer interchange, loss runs…

If you don't know what those words mean, you probably need to learn before you sign the policy.

📑 Understanding factoring
Fees, reserves, contracts, minimums, claims… don't just look at how fast they can get you money. Understand the agreement.

⏰ Documenting your time
Arrival times. Check-in. Loading. Unloading. Departure.

If you aren't documenting it, it can be awfully hard to prove it later.

📞 Building broker relationships
The load board isn't the whole trucking industry. Professional communication, reliability, and relationships matter.

🧾 Accounting & taxes
Matthew Wood joined us to talk about keeping business and personal finances separate, IFTA, record keeping, tax responsibilities, and why waiting until tax time to figure everything out can be a VERY expensive decision.

UCR. BOC-3. MCS-150. Drug & alcohol requirements. State permits. IFTA.

Running a trucking company means keeping up with the business after the truck starts rolling.

🔎 BROKERS: Are You Actually Checking Who You're Putting On Your Loads?

And carriers—this applies to you too.

Before you trust someone with your business, you should know who you're dealing with.

A legitimate-looking company can still have red flags.

Things worth checking include:

📋 Authority status
📋 Safety information
📋 Insurance
📋 Contact information
📋 Operating history
📋 Whether the information you're being given actually matches the company

In trucking, verification matters.

Don't assume someone is legitimate because they have a logo, a website, and a good-looking email signature.

Do your homework. 🚛
