The Shakhi-Zinda complex in Samarkand is often known as the “Path of the Dead” or the “Street of the Dead.” This sacred necropolis has served for centuries as the resting place of nobles, saints, and members of the royal court.

Its name, “Shakhi-Zinda,” comes from Persian and means “The Living King.” It refers to Qusam ibn Abbas, a cousin of the Prophet Muhammad, who, according to legend, did not die but descended beneath the earth alive and remains there until the end of time.

Gur-Emir is a magnificent mausoleum from the 14th–15th centuries in Samarkand, the final resting place of the Timurid dynasty. Its iconic dome, the color of the early morning sky, seems to echo the passage of centuries.
