Having spent 20yrs driving ships in the Royal Navy, I moved to the USA, becoming a yacht broker for St Barts Yachts, Charleston and then a delivery skipper around 2016. I have skippered

plenty of charters in the Virgin Islands and moved many many charter boats back and forth from the Caribbean. More recently I spend a lot of time teaching new boat owners how to operate their craft, instructing them in all aspects of boat management with the aim of having the best time - while remaining safe!

Sailors - check your batteries!!

Unfortunately we had to turn back on my last voyage - BVI to CT - as the house batteries were dead. Even a survey the previous week did not pick this (major) fault up.

Merely reading the voltage across the battery does not give you the ‘health’ of the battery. A dedicated device is required to test this which simulates putting the battery under load. These devices are not overly expensive, and will ensure you can regularly check your batteries.

Unfortunately had to abort the ‘BVI to Connecticut’ delivery 125nm out - and return to base (Sopers Hole at dawn!) - main battery bank failure.
Hope to complete the job once repairs made

I’m excited to fly to BVI tomorrow to pick up a Beneteau Oceanis 461 and sail to Connecticut!
Over 2,000nm in a quick and well equipped model that I know well, as I originally got into delivery working for Beneteau!

Another successful delivery! Three and a half days from Deltaville VA to Newport RI (through NY City) in the Maine 30’ catamaran. I wish the new owner many years of fun and exploration in this very-quick cat!

Excited to set off this evening on a short trip: Chesapeake to Newport RI in a Maine 30’ catamaran!
Described as a ‘fast open cat’ it has a hard cockpit roof with isenglass all round that allows combinations of wind/enclosure with excellent visibility from the help position.
With two Yamaha 9.9HP outboards that can be rotated up & out of the water - I’m looking g forward to some fast sailing in the next few days!
