We started our last day in Venice at Fluffy Brunch for an unique (albeit not very italian) brunch experience. Then, ferried to Burano for an afternoon. There we found the cutest town with bright colored houses, quaint restaurants and gift shops, and the only "real gelato" that we encountered (based on Ally Rae's assessment that gelato should be kept under the silver container without showing off "unnatural" colors). We rounded off our last evening with a meetup with friends at Ristorante La Fornace where we tried cuttlefish and octopus. I preferred the brunch!

Cooking Classes are the best! We love to book a cooking class whenever we travel to a different country or culture! Chef Carolyn was amazing and taught us to make homemade ravioli and pasta, pesto sauce and Doge's cream for dessert.

Cicchetti = yummy finger foods

We actually stayed at the Hyatt Centric Murano while visiting Venice. This is a separate island that requires a ferry ticket. You can purchase the ferry pass for one ride, or for multiple day passes.

I love using the app Rome2Rio to help me navigate new cities!

As luck would have it, the ferry stop is right in front of our hotel!

Venice: our final destination

Of all the places we visited on this trip, Venice was the best way to end it. The chill vibe, no cars, canals and water taxis everywhere just made for a beautiful wrap up for our Italian adventure!

Our train pulled in to St Lucia station, and the view was spectacular! We took a moment to figure out you have to pay for the restrooms around town.

Travel hack: find a coffee shop or bakery that had seats, stools, etc. Seats = restrooms. No seats = no restrooms.

Order a quick shot of espresso for one euro and you get to use the restroom!

Naples is the place for Futbal fans! We found the neighborhood dedicated solely to Maradona, then headed to see one of our favorite Americans (Christian Pulisic) play on AC Milan against Napoli.

BEWARE: Naples is not a friendly place for fans of the opposing team! Our kids were told by the local police to zip their coats up over their Pulisic jerseys so they could "be safe".

After that stressful evening we needed some comfort food a.k.a. McDonald's!

Day Six: Naples

Leaving our cute rental in Sorrento we drove north along the coast to Naples.

This drive gave great views of both the western coast of Italy and also of the famous Mt. Vesuvius as we headed into town!

Day Five: Sorrento and Amalfi Coast

If you thought a drive along Amalfi Coast would be majestic, serene, or peaceful...you'd be dead wrong. Hit with a rainy day, we decided to take our nine passenger rental van for a drive along to coast to see the gardens of Villa Rufolo. The drive was CRAZY winding roads with switchbacks around every corner. Huge tour buses honked and motorcycles nudged their way in between cars on narrow wet roads, all while driving along a cliff.

The gardens themselves were lovely even in the rain, but I'd think twice before driving there again!

Another new experience: we rode a fast train from Naples to Venice on Trenitalia.

Pros: less stressful than an airport as you only have to arrive 20 minutes before your train. A bit less expensive than a plane flight. Nice views of the countryside that we might otherwise not have seen!

Cons: motion sickness! We found out a direct ticket only meant we didn't have to switch trains to get to Venice, it didn't mean there weren't stops along the way. Having to slow down for all the train stops really made for some bumpy areas.

All in all it was a good experience, but I think I'd pick a flight next time instead of a six hour train!

The food on the train was not amazing, I recommend grabbing something in the station to take with you.

Day Four: Pompeii

We rented a car from Rome and headed about two hours Southwest to Pompeii. Entry tickets were purchased on the official site here: https://pompeiisites.org/en/buy-tickets/

We wandered around ourselves without a guide and really enjoyed going at our own pace.

Lunch was amazing at foccaceria e vinneria!

Our last night in Rome was spent at a rooftop bar called Oro Bistrot. We made a reservation for the cocktail bar and had cocktails and mocktails (snacks included) with a gorgeous view of Vittorio Emmanuele monument.

Day Three: Vatican City

We booked a skip the line ticket for the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel (also through Viator).

What we thought was en entry ticket was actually a full blown two and a half hour tour through the museum. Our guide shared great stories about the artists, but it was A LOT of art leading up to the Sistine Chapel, which was our main goal!

Spoiler: You are NOT allowed to take any photos or videos inside the Chapel, so no captured moments there! It was a rainy morning so spending it inside worked out anyway!

There's nothing quite like the Colleseum lit up at night time! We strolled for an hour to find just the right spot for dinner and this one did not disappoint! Klass Ristorante Pizzaria
Pro tip: ask to sit in the garden, we basically had the place to ourselves!

After dinner we took a short walk to the Trevi Fountain and were able to get right up to throw in coins!
