Seasonal labor and agricultural guest workers are ESSENTAIL to NY agriculture. The seasonal nature of farming sometimes results in long days and even nights. The weather dictates our schedule, not the farmer. An 60 hour week might be followed by multiple days off due to an unplanned rain, keeping farmers and their help from the field.
Reducing the overtime threshold from 60 hours, will not only leave more fresh produce to rot, it will also take from workers paychecks and YOUR LOCAL economy. Farmers already work on slim margins, and cannot afford overtime pay to harvest their perishable goods. Workers will have to settle for less hours and a lower paychecks. These workers come from THOUSANDS of miles away to provide for THEIR families and a CHANCE to create a better life all while putting food on YOUR table.
Tomorrow, December 31st, 2020 the NYS Department Of Labor will make a decision on a reduction in the current overtime threshold of for NYS farm workers.
