Some have asked, "what exactly is the goal here?"

Our vision includes restoring both the WM K-3014 and the WM 144 for inclusion in a scenic railroad operation in partnership with a small shortline in the Mid-Atlantic United States. Once those agreements are ratified and our equipment is moved to their property, we expect to provide an experience that is hard to come by in their operating region.

We expect to use the 144 to power those trains with occasional stints in freight and photo freight service and to restore and use the K-3014 as a kitchen car once more.

Won't you consider a donation to help get the WM 144 home?

Update: We are now at $1300 donated! Thank you! A private donor has approached us and is asking us to challenge you all to raise $2000 in the next two weeks! He will then match that donation with $2000 of his own to get us just over 25% of the way through our fundraising goal! Won't you chip in today?

The WMRHF, a 501c3 not-for-profit organization, is seeking donations to help fund the relocation efforts of the last remaining Western Maryland ALCO S2. Built in 1946, the WM Ry. 144 is presently in Capreol, ON, Canada on a siding that is to be torn up in the coming weeks.

The WMRHF is partnering with a local railroad museum in Capreol to temporarily locate the locomotive on their premises to allow time for the 144 to prepare for movement by rail over the Canadian National and finally over CSX to its future permanent home in the United States. Our long term plan is to repatriate this locomotive and return it to serviceable condition along with our Western Maryland ACF Kitchen Car K-3014.

We have already engaged a heavy hauler (JTS) in the vicinity of the locomotive and are working diligently with them and their crane service provider to save this historic locomotive.

Won't you consider making a donation today? Our goal is to raise $20,000 to move this effort along. We have already fully funded and satisfied the storage lien owed by the previous owner of the 144. Any help is appreciated! Please like, share and follow us for progress with our projects.

Yesterday we took a visit to Youngstown, OH to view the Erie Lackawanna Troop Sleeper that the Mahoning Valley Railroad Heritage Association rosters. President Carl Jacobson was nice enough to give a comprehensive tour of the equipment there. Instead of Allied Trucks, this car has old Bettendorf trucks, stamped 1944.

Railroad historian Dwight Jones stopped by to visit this past week. His reason for being in Maryland was twofold: primarily to do some research for a new book he is working on, and secondarily to meet with Larry Brock to get some information regarding the WM troop kitchen car he has had stored on his property for 40 years or more at the site if Brock Salvage in South Cumberland.

We met Larry and Dwight was able to get some information about the car plus some of the rigging from the last existing WM crane, a 250 ton Brownhoist which, to my dismay, was scrapped by the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad during the Ed Kemmet era.

We visited the car, but it was so overgrown with weeds, shrubs and trees it was not possible to get a half decent picture. I promised Dwight that I would have that conversation with Mother Nature on his behalf and that if he would stop back on his return trip to Columbus, Ohio he could knock himself out taking pictures.

It is not known by myself the exact car number, but I'm sure Dwight does. You can still read the W E S T E R N M A R Y L A N D in the letterboard. The car is rough. It still has couplers on both ends and the hand brake equipment is there. Larry said he donated the car to the same outfit that scrapped the last existing crane.

While not yet scanned, feast your eyes upon the first known picture to me of K-3014 in service. This shot shows K-3014 resting in Hagerstown in the mid-60s, coupled to a unknown tender and gon/side dump car on the other end. Restoration work continues on K-3014, with exterior work beginning next week.
