Diesel prices are spiking again—and the logistics industry is feeling it fast.
The national average for diesel has jumped to $5.345 per gallon, climbing more than $1.60 in just one month and nearing the all-time record set in 2022.
The surge is being driven by major disruptions to global oil supply following conflict in the Middle East and the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a route that typically carries about 20% of the world’s oil.
Current averages:
• U.S.: $5.345/gal
• California: $6.767
• New York: $5.531
• Texas: $4.877
Rapid fuel increases create immediate pressure across the supply chain. When diesel moves this quickly, fuel surcharge models struggle to keep up, capacity tightens, and transportation costs ripple through the economy.

The trucking industry may be facing a meaningful shift in driver capacity

A new federal rule will limit the ability of certain noncitizens to obtain or renew commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs). While current licenses remain valid until expiration, the long-term effect could gradually reduce the available driver pool.

Here are the key facts:
• An estimated 200,000 drivers could be impacted over time
• That represents 5%+ of the total U.S. driver population
• Trucks move over 70% of all U.S. freight
• The impact will be gradual, not immediate, as licenses expire

Who is affected:
This includes legally authorized workers such as asylum seekers, refugees, and DACA recipients who are currently eligible to operate commercial vehicles.

What this means for the industry:
• Tightening capacity in certain lanes or markets
• Increased competition for qualified drivers
• Upward pressure on wages and operating costs
• Potential impact on freight rates over time

Diesel prices have surged faster than gasoline recently — driven by tighter supplies, winter heating-oil demand and geopolitical tensions — pushing diesel near $5/gal and forcing carriers to raise fuel surcharges. This increases costs across the supply chain, from trucking and container shipping to seasonal farm operations, and may lead to higher prices for goods. At Superior Logistics we’re actively monitoring fuel markets, adjusting routing and carrier strategies, and working with customers to manage cost impacts and maintain reliable service.
