Hey everyone!! The last couple months have been crazy busy! Among the chaos I've been able to start some construction in Lillian's foc'sle. I had to do a major design change but better on paper than after building begins.
So far, the framing for the new double berth is almost complete as is the framing for the bulkheads for the new head. The head will also have it's own shower and a small locker just aft of the stem for storage.
Between the berth and head will be a built-in sofa on the port side and a writing desk and small wood or diesel burning fireplace/heater to starboard.
I've also located a source for portholes which will be reinstalled in the head and main area for lots of natural light and ventilation.
Also, as some of you may have heard, we plan to bring Lillian to the 2023 Olympia Harbor Days festival this year!! It's their 50th anniversary and promises to be a lot of fun. I'm very excited about being able to attend this year. It will be Lillian's first time and she'll be open for tours and she may even race!! Cheers!!

Making some progress on Lillian's foc'sle bulkhead. This is between the foc'sle and the forward fish hold. The tongue and groove planking was removed to access the bolts that run through the 4" thick stacked timbers that make up the break beam. Still need to fill nail holes, do a little caulking, and build up coats of paint. But the major sanding is done!! Woohoo!!

Baby steps. This week saw Lillian's foc'sle get some new overhead lights! There's still a ton of paint and wood work to do but it's definitely nice to be able to see what I'm doing.

Lillian's foc'sle is getting a coat of paint. Still a few old bolt holes to fill! Lol
Wiring for lights and power should happen in a couple more weeks. I'll finish up the after bulkhead and we'll be ready to begin construction of the new stateroom with it's own enclosed head and shower!

Lillian got a new wheelhouse face and a new forward mast this summer!! I'm excited to finish out the windows and start fabricating the mast ironwork. Hopefully, we'll be stepping the mast by early Spring.

Say hello to 110 year old foc's'le decking! After scraping off many, many layers of paint I found the wood to be in remarkably good condition. The dark areas are where the old bunks were and the planks were never painted. The plan is to finish scraping the rest of the decking, stain to even out some of the color, and finish with several coats of teak oil.

It's been awhile since I last posted but I'm still making progress on Lillian's restoration. First of all, last month was her 110th birthday!! I'm happy to say the old girl is in better condition now than she's been in a long time!
Also, after a lot of consideration and debate, I've decided that rather than putting her back to work as a Commercial Fishing Tender the best use for her is to go into the local charter trade.
Beginning in the Summer of 2023, Lillian S. will be available for day charters for up to 6 passengers for tours of Puget Sound. We will feature a full galley, inside and outside seating, and spectacular scenery. I'll post more about this later.
As our Puget Sound Spring has been a bit on the wet and chilly side, focus has shifted to inside work. For the last several weeks I've been sanding the old crew quarters in the bow down to bare wood and getting some primer paint on. Yesterday, I removed all the old bunks and bulkheads, storage lockers, and old junk from her fishing days that was laying around and rusting away. This area will be rebuilt as a stateroom with a double berth with a private head and shower. There was some beautiful old wood used in the original construction and I'll reuse as much as I can for the new stateroom. Cheers, everyone!

Time to get caught up. The last several weeks saw a flurry of activity as we hurried to get Lillian back in the water before the money ran out.
Planking was finished, sponsons and guards bolted in, trim and hardware installed, and caulking and more caulking!
We got most of the hull painting done in between rain storms and finally splashed on Tuesday, Dec. 7th. Woohoo!!
We spent the next several days lying alongside the dock getting cleaned up and ready for the trip back to Bainbridge Island.
We got underway at 08:30 Sunday morning, Dec. 12th, in 10 knots of wind and spent a bit of time getting Lillian turned around and leave the marina. Once out, we checked everything to make sure we were safe and headed east toward Marrowstone Island. On rounding Marrowstone Point and turning south we were met with southerly winds 20-25 knots, 4'-6' chop, and an ebb tide. Despite mother nature working against us we had a very easy and comfortable trip and made the 45 mile trip in 4 1/2 hours averaging 10 knots.
Lillian loved the weather and just seemed to come alive!
