Lost another old friend and mentor this week. Mr Tim Vargo passed away. My heart goes out to his family. Tim helped me, actually was instrumental, in jumpstarting my professional racing career. My first time managing a pro racing team was for his 1992 Porsche 911 Cup car we converted to IMSA GTS2 rules to compete in the 1996 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona.
These were grass roots days. The year before I remember Tim driving six of us all in his Ford F350 truck trailering the same car to Road Atlanta from Memphis for a PCA club race.
Tim was CFO of AutoZone back then. If not for his love of Motorsport, his generosity and mentorship, I’d probably never had the career I’ve had. Team Vargo was my first racing family 100%. Rest in Peace my old friend. You had one fantastic ride here on earth and I’m sure Laura, Jake and Josh will continue to make you proud.
