Today, we honor Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorating June 19, 1865, when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

The monument featured in this image stands at Ashton Villa in Galveston and honors Texas State Representative Al Edwards, often called the "Father of Juneteenth." Through his efforts, Juneteenth became an official Texas state holiday in 1979, helping preserve and elevate this important chapter of American history for future generations.
