SCAM ALERT SATURDAY: USED CAR-BUYING SCAM

On January 18, 2025, your Denver Police officers responded to a residents on W. Center Drive to investigate a reported auto theft. When he arrived on scene, the victim explained that he recently listed his vehicle for sale on a third-party, online marketplace. The suspect inquired about the vehicle and the victim agreed to meet him at a gas station. During their meeting, the victim agreed to sell the vehicle for $80,000. The suspect agreed to the amount and produced check for that amount. When the victim went to deposit the check, he was notified that it bounced due to insufficient funds. The victim contacted the suspect via social media, who initially agreed to help fix the issue but then has since ended all communication with the victim.

Buying and selling things on-line can be risky. If you partake in these types of transactions, be sure to get the funds verified on the check before you deposit it. Your banking institution can help with this. And if a check is the only way to pay, make sure it’s for the exact amount and in the form of a cashier’s check. Also, don’t ever accept over-payment and agree to wire money back – if a buyer asks you to do this, it’s a scam!

APD has seen an increase in a banking scam 🚨

Victims are being called by a phone number that appears to be their bank. The caller says there has been fraud detected on the account from someone using another cell phone in a different state.

When the fake purchases are "confirmed" to be fraud, the scammer says they will deactivate the card and look into the matter.

The scammer then says they will transfer the victim to another associate to set up a digital wallet so the victim can continue using their bank to make legitimate purchases.

The scammer then guides the victim to move money from their Apple Pay account that is linked to their bank, to an Apple Cash account.

From there, the scammer has you go into your Settings, change your Apple I.D. password to something they can access, and move the money to another account. Once that is complete, the scammer hangs up and has secured funds from the account, along with access to your cell phone.

🚔 APD reminds people that if a phone call sounds suspicious, hang up and call your bank/business at a trusted number.

Scammers have the ability to disguise phone calls from nearly anywhere- a bank, a business and even government offices.

Stay vigilant! If it sounds suspicious, it just might be!
