Augusta Age-Friendly

Augusta Age-Friendly Working with AARP, our committee is working towards making Augusta, Maine a livable community for people of all ages.

Augusta Age-Friendly is a committee of community members devoted to making Augusta, Maine a livable community for people of all ages; supporting healthy aging, aging in place, and inter-generational work and fun within the community. The committee is looking at making improvements to Augusta's eight domains of livability; outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation, housing, social participation,

The Sand Buckets and Clear Paths programs are back for the 7th year!

AUGUSTA, ME. – For the seventh year, Augusta Age-Friendly, City of Augusta Parks and Recreation, Augusta Police Department, and the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office are once again joining forces to support Augusta residents who are 60 years and older, who have a disability or physical limitations that prevent them from clearing their pathways or obtaining sand for winter safety.

Through this partnership, eligible residents will receive free 5-gallon buckets of salted sand and assistance with clearing snow from walkways to ensure safe access to their homes and to facilitate fuel deliveries during the winter months.

How the Program Works:
• Sand Delivery: Parks and Recreation staff, driving orange City trucks, will deliver one 5-gallon bucket of salted sand to your home. We will also provide refills for participants who have their own buckets from previous years. Deliveries will begin after Thanksgiving.
• Snow Removal: The Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office staff will assist with clearing snow from walkways and driveways, as their time and personnel availability allow. Please note that response times may vary, so we recommend having a backup plan in case they are unable to assist immediately following a storm.

How to Apply: If you are eligible and would like to receive sand delivery or snow clearing assistance, please contact
Wendy Somes at the Buker Community Center at
207-626-2350, or via email at [email protected].

Special Thanks to Our Partners: Augusta Age-Friendly would like to express our gratitude to the following community partners for their generous donations of additional buckets for the 2024-2025 winter season:
• Aubuchon Hardware
• Hancock Lumber
• Harbor Freight Tools
• Home Depot
• Lowe’s
