Know the 20% Rule

CVSA's Brake Safety Week begins August 23-29, and the top brake-related OOS violation every year is the 20% defective brake rule. If 20% or more of a vehicle's brakes are impaired, that truck is placed out of service. Last year, 15% of vehicles inspected during Brake Safety Week received OOS violations. Make sure your fleet is ready before the week begins.

As Operation Safe Driver Week winds down, here's something worth remembering. A citation issued this week doesn't stay in this week. It feeds directly into your CSA score and can affect it for up to 24 months, influencing everything from inspection frequency to insurance costs. At PTP Transport, every driver completes ongoing safety training so these habits stay second nature long after the week ends. A quick reminder as Safe Driver Week continues. Avoiding citations during Operation Safe Driver Week comes down to the same habits that keep drivers safe every week of the year. Keep at least one second of following distance for every 10 feet of your vehicle at 40 mph or below, and add extra room in bad weather or heavy traffic.

Operation Safe Driver Week starts this Sunday, July 12, and runs through Saturday, July 18. For the third year in a row, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance is focusing on reckless, careless or dangerous driving, with law enforcement across the United States, Canada and Mexico watching closely. It's a good weekend to double check your habits before the week gets underway. Safe driving isn't something we turn on for enforcement weeks at PTP Transport. It's how we run every single day.
