Did you know one small item you packed for a little fun could actually become your travel downfall?

A simple deck of cards 🃏is not actually a problem for TSA—but under airport X-ray scanners, it appears as a tight, uniform rectangular block with very consistent density. Because it’s made of many thin layers of paper pressed together, it can sometimes look like a solid, slightly opaque block of mass on the screen, especially when stacked neatly or bundled tightly with other items. If it’s placed inside a metal tin or rigid case, the scanner will show a strong, dark outline around the box, which can make it harder for agents to quickly distinguish what’s inside at a glance.

📌To avoid any delays, keep your deck in your carry-on where it’s easy to access if TSA needs to inspect it. If your cards come in a metal tin or bulky case, consider switching to a simple cardboard box or removing the packaging altogether to make the contents more visually clear on the scanner.

ℹ️It’s also a good idea to keep them separate from cluttered items in your bag so they don’t blend into other objects on the X-ray image. A clean, organized carry-on helps security agents quickly identify what they’re seeing—and helps you get to your gate faster.

Save & I hope this travel tip helps you avoid airport delays.

The one thing that was different about Rio for me this time around was what I should have been doing in this photo…

Not holding my phone in my hand in public OR not having my purse crossbody🚫🤳🏾👜

Those were two of the biggest safety tips we heard repeatedly from locals, and after spending more time in the city, I understood why.

On my first trip, we stayed in Barra da Tijuca. Everyone warned us about keeping our phones put away, but the reality is you’re not walking around as much there, so it’s less of an issue.

When you stay in Ipanema or Copacabana, daily life is very different. You’re walking everywhere. On those busy streets and beachfronts, casually holding your phone or wearing flashy jewelry can make you a target. Phone snatching is common, and it happened to someone in our group.

Ironically, this photo was taken in a favela—one of the places many people are told is “too dangerous” to visit. Yet I actually felt safer there than I did on the beach.

Rio is an incredible city, but understanding the differences between neighborhoods can completely change your experience.

Travel smarter, stay aware, and don’t assume the places with the biggest reputations are always the places where you’ll feel the least safe.

📍Welcome to Little Africa 🌍
We walked the same neighborhoods where our ancestors were enslaved, traded, punished, and forced to rebuild a nation that still carries their fingerprints today.

The Baobab Tree holds deep spiritual and emotional meaning. Before enslaved Africans were forced onto ships, many were made to walk around a Baobab tree in Africa as a symbolic farewell to their homeland, identity, language, and freedom. Those who survived the brutal Middle Passage were then forced to walk around another Baobab tree here in Brazil, marking the beginning of a life in bo***ge. A painful ritual meant to erase who they were, while our ancestors fought to preserve their spirit anyway.

The Salt Rock also carries heavy significance. Enslaved Africans arriving at the port were weak, dehydrated, wounded, and often close to death after crossing the Atlantic under horrific conditions. Salt was rubbed into their skin and wounds before they were sold. It was used to “preserve” the bodies of enslaved people much like cargo, while also hiding infections and making them appear stronger for sale. The Salt Rock stands as a reminder that our ancestors were treated as commodities, but survived with resilience, culture, faith, and resistance intact.

Little Africa is not just history. It is memory, survival, resistance, and legacy✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿
