On Wednesday, the Pitkin County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) voted to move the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport Modernization Program into formal permitting and future construction phases.

The approval keeps the project on track for preparatory construction work in 2026 and a planned single-season airport closure in 2027. The modernization program includes runway and airfield reconstruction, a new terminal and landside facilities, and airport safety and operational improvements.

Aspen’s runway has stories and a long community history.
From a humble airstrip carved into a historic ranch in the Roaring Fork Valley in the 1940s, to the mountain airport so many of us know today. has always been part of the rhythm of this place. What started as a simple strip of land helped connect a small, remote town to the wider world.
Now it’s the way home after a trip, the first glimpse of the valley and the familiar approach between the peaks.
Not your average landing, but it was never meant to be.
