Some of the best meals I’ve ever eaten have been in the middle of nowhere. There’s something about sitting down to a chef-cooked dinner after a long day on the trail that brings a group together. People who started the morning as strangers end the night talking around the table.

Jesse Houston of Switchback Supper Club makes this possible on a lot of our trips. Jesse is a James Beard semifinalist and an adventure chef, which means he took his kitchen into the backcountry and cooks every meal on location, wherever we set up camp. His food is as good as anything you’d be served in a five-star restaurant, except you’re eating it around a campfire.

The meals are a big part of what we do on every Fernweh trip, and a big part of why people come back.

The San Rafael Swell lived up to everything we hoped for. The campsites were some of the best we’ve pulled into, and Jesse Houston of Switchback Supper Club cooked up some incredible meals out there that we’re still thinking about.

What made this trip, though, was the people. This was a great group, and the time we got to spend together is what we’ll remember most.

A big thank you to Randy Bacon for sharing the history of the area with us, and to Switchback Supper Club for the amazing meals.

Two spots left for our Montana Northbound Expedition.

This is footage from the Montana Northbound pre-run a couple weeks back.

We scout every expedition before you ever turn a wheel: locking in the best routes, stops, and campsites. Some of these are narrow mountain roads - the kind you’d rather know *before* you’re on them. Now I do, and we’ll run them together as a group.

The driving will make you more confident off-road. But the thing people talk about after these trips is the crew they ran it with.

Two spots left for July. If it’s calling you, come grab one.

A trail on a map doesn’t tell you the full story. This is why we pre-run every route, often weeks or months before the group shows up.

Last time out, we hit late-spring snow and we found multiple trees down across the trail, a few of them big enough that we had to break out the chainsaw. More could come down between now and the trip, and we plan for that. Pre-running isn’t about guaranteeing a clear trail. It’s about knowing the route and being ready for whatever’s on it.

That’s why we go first. We figure out what the trail is all about. We scout the campsites that work and the ones that don’t. By the time you’re out there with us, we already know what’s around the next bend.

The full story from this scouting run is in this month’s Fernweh dispatch. Read it here: https://fernwehguidedexpeditions.com/notes-from-11-days-of-scouting/

The summer routes are set and we have some spots remaining. See what’s available:

Excited to run this route with the group for our sold out San Rafael Swell trip. We are stoked to get this crew together and get out there - it is shaping up to be an awesome trip.

After San Rafael, we have our Montana expedition in July (2spots left) and our Medicine Bow Wyoming expedition is back in August. Send us a message if either one’s on your radar!

Prep is underway for our Montana Expedition. Joel was out at sunrise pre-running the routes we’ll drive together this July.

The Montana Northbound Expedition runs July 12 to 16, 2026. Five days of curated overland travel from XOVERLAND Ranch up to Whitefish, bridging The Big Thing and Under the Big Sky Music Festival. Backroads to explore, real time getting to know what your rig can do, and shared dinners with good people at camp each night.

We only have space for 2 more rigs, so be sure to register soon if you are interested.

We’re heading back to Medicine Bow this August. Three days in the Snowy Range right after Overland Expo Mountain West, covering forest roads, alpine lakes, and real off-road terrain with a small group of like-minded people. Good food at camp, skill building throughout, and plenty of time to just be out there with the community.

August 24-26, 2026 | Spots are limited

San Rafael Swell is sold out, and we are so excited to get that group together.

Fortunately, we still have two more exciting expeditions on the calendar this year. In July we’re headed to Montana right after The Big Thing, and in August we’re headed to Medicine Bow in Wyoming.

If you want to get in on either of these events, the link is below for details and registration, and you can always email us at [email protected] with any questions.

Sometimes a guest puts it better than we ever could.

Dave Corso joined us for the Colorado Sandhill Crane Expedition earlier this year and wrote about it for Storyteller Overland - the community, the guides, the reason you keep coming back to trips like this. Swipe through for a few of his words.
