Just 6 spots left on the 2027 Medicine Bow National Forest Expedition.

In August we’re heading back to Wyoming’s Medicine Bow country, and this year we’re slowing down. We’ll hike to alpine lakes and overlooks, stop for landmarks and wildlife, and spend time with the history along the old forest roads.

We meet near Loveland right after Overland Expo Mountain West wraps up, so if you’re at the Expo you can head straight over and join us. From there it’s four days across the Colorado and Wyoming high country, camping near 10,000 feet with chef-prepared meals and a fire every night.

11 to 80. That’s the age range of the people who joined us on Fernweh trips so far.

We’ve traveled to incredible places and sat around a lot of campfires. But when I look back on our trips, it’s the people that stand out most. Kids, couples, solo travelers, first-timers and experienced overlanders, all around the same fire.

We are heading back to the San Rafael Swell in 2027 - and we have just 5 spots left!

On May 20-23 we’ll spend four days exploring central Utah’s San Rafael Swell. We’ll hike canyons, look for petroglyphs and dinosaur tracks, and have potential stops at Wedge Overlook, Moonscape Overlook, and Swasey’s Cabin. At night we camp out, eat together, and sit around the fire. Geologist Randy Bacon joins us again to walk us through the geology along the way.

Just 3 spots left on the 2027 Black Rock Desert Expedition.

Four days across Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, past the familiar playa images and into remote valleys, canyons, and high desert. We’ll work on off-road driving and recovery, dig into the geology and history under our wheels, hike, soak in a natural hot spring, and camp each night under dark Nevada skies.

Desert naturalist Jeff Rosenfeld of Wildwood Open Lands Foundation joins us again, bringing context and connection to every stop.

Only 4 spots left on the 2027 Monte Vista Expedition

Every spring, thousands of sandhill cranes return to Colorado’s San Luis Valley. The migration brings us down, but this trip is really about slowing down and connecting to the land.

Over four days we’ll explore the Monte Vista and Alamosa wildlife refuges, stand beneath the tallest dunes in North America at Great Sand Dunes, and gather around the fire each evening to talk over what we saw. Photographers Randy Bacon and Mike Endres travel with us the whole way, teaching as we go.

Day 2 of the Fernweh Expeditions Medicine Bow trip took us farther north, where we caught some incredible views of the Snowy Range. We climbed to higher elevations, saw plenty of moose, and made time for a great lunch stop and a walk along the way. Of course, there were still plenty of fun trail miles to keep us exploring.
