That’s the beauty of understanding the courier industry.

Almost every industry needs something moved.

Healthcare needs couriers.
Pharmacies need couriers.

The package changes.

And this is exactly why I don’t believe you need a giant vehicle to start thinking bigger.

We did this in our SUV. 🚗

The goal isn’t to make your vehicle look like a delivery truck.

The goal is to know what you’re delivering, who needs it, how urgent it is, and what the service is worth.

Because HOSPITAL work changes the conversation.

When something is needed NOW, reliability matters.

And that’s where a courier business can become more than just driving from Point A to Point B.

Do a day like this twice?

Now, I’ve been getting A LOT of messages about TSA air cargo lately.

And some of y’all are confusing AIRPORT ACCESS with AUTHORIZATION TO HANDLE REGULATED AIR CARGO! 😭

Those are TWO different things!

My company handles daily TSA shipments, including urgent AOG freight, from small packages to multimillion-dollar aircraft engines.

But let’s clear something up!

✈️ TSA PreCheck does NOT authorize you to handle regulated air cargo.

✈️ A TWIC card alone does NOT satisfy every air cargo security requirement.

✈️ Depending on the shipment and your role, you may need an approved Security Threat Assessment (STA)

✈️ An authorized Indirect Air Carrier (IAC) may be involved in arranging those requirements.

And NO, you can’t necessarily just Google an exam, pay for it, and start hauling regulated air cargo tomorrow! 😂

People tell me:

“I’ve delivered to airlines before, and nobody asked me for all that!”

OKAYYYYY! 😂 But that doesn’t automatically mean every security requirement was satisfied!

COMPLIANCE IS NOT SOMETHING YOU WANT TO GUESS ABOUT!

TSA conducts inspections, and violations can carry serious consequences.

THERE ARE LEVELS TO THIS COURIER INDUSTRY! 💯

Pharmaceuticals. Lab specimens. STATs. Expedited freight. AOG. Air cargo.

COURIERS…YOUR BUSINESS BANK ACCOUNT IS NOT YOUR PERSONAL PIGGY BANK! 😭😂

Let's talk about something that can make tax season WAY more stressful than it needs to be.

MIXING BUSINESS MONEY WITH PERSONAL MONEY! 💸

Because some of y'all are getting paid for courier routes on Friday and by Saturday that SAME account has transactions for:

💊 Pharmacy deliveries
⛽ Business fuel
🛒 Walmart groceries
💅🏾 Nail appointments
🚗 Auto-parts deliveries
🍔 Chick-fil-A
📱 Business phone bills
👟 A little shopping spree

BABYYYY! 😭😂

Now you've got 200 transactions and you're trying to figure out what's BUSINESS and what's PERSONAL!

THIS IS CALLED COMMINGLING FUNDS.

And while mixing funds doesn't automatically mean you've violated tax laws, it can make bookkeeping, tax preparation, and documenting legitimate business expenses MUCH harder.

🚨 HERE'S WHAT I WANT MY COURIERS TO UNDERSTAND:

Having an LLC doesn't automatically make every purchase a business expense.

And paying for something with a business debit card doesn't magically turn a personal expense into a tax deduction!

LET'S MAKE THIS SIMPLE. 👀

Say you earned $2,500 from courier contracts this week.

You use that money to pay:

⛽ $150 in qualifying business fuel expenses
📦 $75 in courier supplies
🛒 $200 in personal groceries
💅🏾 $100 for a nail appointment

Those last two purchases don't become deductible just because the money came from your courier business.

And remember, if you're using the standard mileage method, you generally cannot also deduct your gas separately for that same vehicle.

THE IRS CARES ABOUT WHAT THE EXPENSE WAS ACTUALLY FOR! 🧾

Now, do you HAVE to have a separate business bank account to claim legitimate business expenses?

Not necessarily.

But having one can make your life SO MUCH EASIER!

It helps you:

✅ Track courier income
✅ Identify business expenses
✅ Organize tax records
✅ Monitor business cash flow
✅ Separate personal spending
✅ Prepare cleaner financial reports

And for those operating LLCs or corporations, keeping business and personal finances separate can also be important for maintaining proper business records and legal separation.

YOUR COURIER BUSINESS NEEDS A SYSTEM, NOT JUST A CASH APP NOTIFICATION! 😭😂

💡 TODAY'S TAX SEASON HOMEWORK:

Look at the account where you receive your courier payments.

Are your personal and business transactions mixed together?

If so, start separating and categorizing them NOW.

If you don't already have a dedicated business account, consider opening one and using it consistently for your business income and expenses.

And if you're a sole proprietor, remember that transferring money from your business account to your personal account generally isn't a deductible business expense. That's typically an owner's draw.

MAKING MONEY IS GOOD. KNOWING WHERE YOUR MONEY IS GOING IS EVEN BETTER! 💯

COURIERS…Y'ALL PAID FOR THOSE CERTIFICATIONS, BUT DID YOU KEEP THE RECEIPTS?! 👀😂

Let's talk about something a LOT of independent contractors overlook when preparing for tax season.

CERTIFICATIONS, TRAINING & CONTINUING EDUCATION! 📚

Because depending on the type of courier work you're doing, you may have spent money learning how to properly handle and transport certain types of deliveries.

For example:

💊 HIPAA Training
🩸 Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) Training
🧪 Specimen Handling & Transportation
✈️ TSA Air Cargo Training
☣️ Hazardous Materials Training
🧊 Cold-Chain Logistics Training
📚 Continuing Education Courses

And guess what?

Some work-related training and education expenses MAY qualify as business tax deductions! 💰

BUT HOLD ON! 🚨

Before y'all start trying to write off EVERY class you've ever taken…😭😂

NOT ALL TRAINING EXPENSES ARE AUTOMATICALLY TAX DEDUCTIBLE!

Here's where the difference matters.

Generally, qualifying work-related education must help maintain or improve skills needed in your existing business or meet certain requirements for that work.

Education that qualifies you for a new trade or business generally doesn't qualify under those same rules.

LET ME MAKE THIS COURIER-SIMPLE! 👀

Let's say you're ALREADY operating a medical courier business.

You pay for additional training to improve your specimen-handling skills or maintain certifications needed for your existing contracts.

That training MAY qualify as a business expense.

NOW…

Let's say you haven't started your courier business yet, and you're paying for courses to enter the industry.

Those expenses may be treated differently under tax rules, including possible business startup cost rules.

SEE THE DIFFERENCE?! 💡

And this is why I keep telling y'all:

JUST BECAUSE SOMETHING IS BUSINESS-RELATED DOESN'T MEAN THE IRS AUTOMATICALLY ALLOWS YOU TO DEDUCT IT! 💯

The purpose of the training, your existing business activities, and when the expense was incurred ALL matter.

Now, as someone who actually operates a courier logistics business AND works in the tax industry, I want y'all to understand BOTH sides.

Learning how to secure contracts is important.

Learning how to properly operate and manage the FINANCIAL side of those contracts is JUST as important!

💡 TODAY'S TAX SEASON HOMEWORK:

Go through your 2026 records and identify any money you spent on professional training, certifications, or continuing education.

Look for:

🧾 Course payment receipts
📧 Enrollment confirmations
📚 Training invoices
📄 Certification renewal fees
🏦 Bank or credit card statements

Create a folder labeled 2026 TRAINING & CERTIFICATIONS.

Keep those records so your tax professional can determine which expenses qualify and how they should be treated.
