Lastly, we rode the Blue Ridge Parkway back to Tennessee where we spent a little time with family. On the way to the Parkway we stopped in Appomattox and visited the McLean House where General Lee and General Grant ended the Civil War. Virginia holds so much of our founding history. It is a beautiful state.

These pictures are of Jamestown and Yorktown. Jamestown is an active archeological site. There were digs going on while we were there and a coin had been found just before we arrived. So cool!

We made it to Delaware and headed back south into Virginia again to visit Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown. To say this trip was a history event would be an understatement. There were so many things to see and think about and be thankful for. Jamestown was our favorite.

These pictures are of Williamsburg.

Next we headed to Washington, DC, where we had a tour scheduled of the US Capitol. We toured the Capitol, visited the Library of Congress, The Air and Space Smithsonian, and the Natural History Smithsonian. We walked over nine miles that day. We rode the Metro from near our hotel in Falls Church, VA into DC. Highly recommend that!

Vernon and I have taken many a road trip in our twelve years of marriage. One of our goals has been to see all 50 states together. Somehow when we were in the northeast region some nine years ago we totally bypassed Delaware which was not that hard to do. So this Fall Road Trip had a goal in mind. We had to make it to Delaware, our 48th state together. We went by way of the Blue Ridge Parkway on our way to our first stop of Thomas Jefferson's home Monticello in Charlottesville, Virginia

We spent the day at a lovely Alabama State Park close to Birmingham. Tannehill Ironworks State Historical Park is so nice! The weather started in the high 70's and stayed in the lower 80's which only made it more enjoyable. Tannehill is located in McCall, AL, and is accessible from I-20 between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham. Tannehill is the site of an old ironworks mill that was built before the Civil War. They were a main supplier to the Confederate armies of ammunition and weapons. Needless to say it was burned to the ground by Union troops. The mill was rebuilt sometime in the 20th century. There is a wonderful museum, several historical buildings including a church and grain mill, at least a dozen authentic cabins that have been moved there from all over Alabama (some of these are rentable), full hook-up campground with lots of great sites near the streams and river, hiking/biking trails and a creamery that sells 30 flavors of Bluebell Ice Cream! Every weekend through November 1 craft cabins are open selling homemade items. Once a month there is a huge Trade Days show. https://www.tannehillstatepark.org/
We hope to camp there sometime - maybe in the Fall. Check out our video!
