Established in 1930, MRI is the first official airport of the state and is home to 40+aviation businesses. Merrill Field is a Commercial Service airport. Merrill Field was established in 1930 one mile east of downtown Anchorage on 436 acres. This was the first real airport in Anchorage. The airport bears the name of Russel Hyde Merrill. Russel Merrill was an early Alaskan aviation pioneer who disa

ppeared in September 1929 on a flight to Bethel. The first aviation beacon in the Territory of Alaska was located at Merrill Field and was dedicated on September 25, 1932 to the honor of Russ Merrill.

Subject: Effective immediately Runway Number Change at MRI

Attention all Merrill Field Users.

Effective immediately, the former runways 16/34 numbers have been changed to runways 17/35. Please check your NOTAMā€™s.

As of 1630 Local, Tuesday, July 28th, the painting of the numbers is not complete, and not all of the Hold Short runway signs installed. The number change on 17/35 should be completed by 1630 Local Wednesday. All FAA publications should have the correct runway numbers for 8/26 and 17/35 incorporated in the next cycle of publications.

As always, check your NOTAMā€™s and fly safe!
