On Friday 26th June, Paul Gillett – COO Naniq Global Logistics and Jane Treadway – Client Manager NGLi attended and sponsored the Tikigaq / Tigara Educational Foundation Annual Golf Day in Anchorage in support of our Alaskan Native partners. A great day was had by all in support of the Tigara Educational Foundation. ( synopsis below ).

“The Tigara Educational Foundation was established in 1997 to provide grant support for cultural and educational needs to the Village of Point Hope, Alaska. To date, the foundation has given over $300,000 in grants. Last year, our golf tournament
raised over $52,000. Because of these generous donations, the foundation was able to provide support to local students in Point Hope with scholarship money, in addition to making a generous donation to the Tikigaq High School Booster Club.
This event truly benefits the community of Point Hope.”

One of Naniq clients in Alaska, CISPRI (Cook Inlet Spill Prevention and Response, Inc.) is a certified Oil Spill Removal Organization and State of Alaska Primary Response Action Contractor serving the Cook Inlet region of Alaska. CISPRI is a member-owned non-profit corporation providing oil spill planning, training, and response services to facilities and vessels throughout the Cook Inlet region.
Naniq recently was called in to assist CISPRI in an urgent situation. One of their ships, the ‘Perseverence’ a support ship for Furie Alaska’s Cook Inlet Kitchen Lights Project, badly damaged its reduction gear which powers the main drive shaft for the propellers of the boat. Naniq managed to deliver the required spare parts to ensure that the ship was repaired in good time. Tia Spruill, from CISPRI sent us this message :
“I wanted to extend my gratitude for your help this week. I know these shipments never really give us time to mess around and seem to all be HOT, but even with the challenges you have all done a great job keeping us informed and rates at a reasonable price.” Tia Spruill CISPRI

To our valued Customers,

As we have been communicating over the last few months, the ILWU and PMA have been in contract negotiations to put in place a new agreement. So far, the talks have been tame, and little information has been leaked, and speculation has been almost non-existent. The two sides have kept their commitment to keep the negotiations confidential in an effort to reduce any adverse and unwarranted effects on the U.S. economy. The information that has been released comes in the form of joint statements. Another one was released yesterday evening after the close of the negotiations for the day.

The joint press release in its entirety stated;

“The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) announced today that they have reached a tentative agreement on terms for health benefits, subject to agreement on the other issues in the negotiations. The parties have agreed not to discuss the terms of this tentative agreement as negotiations continue.”

It continues: “Maintenance of health benefits (MOB) is an important part of the contract being negotiated between employers represented by the PMA and workers represented by the ILWU. The contract being negotiated covers nearly 20,000 longshore workers at 29 West Coast ports. The previous agreement expired at 5 p.m. on July 1, 2014. Talks began on May 12 and are continuing.”

We believe this to be a positive sign that the US West Coast will remain open and without disruption through the critical peak season. However, there still exists a possibility that talks can deteriorate, and we recommend our Customers put in place contingency plans to avoid any problems. This would include shipping additional inventory now, as well as having a plan to convert some ocean shipments to airfreight should this become necessary.

We will do our best to keep you informed of any additional progress or changes in the talks.

Kind regards,

Raymond Donahue

Naniq recently shipped supplies to Sierra Leone for Children of the Nations on behalf of their customer Gundies. They were extremely happy with the service we provided and commented as follows :

“Thanks very much Naniq! Everyone has been blown away by how quickly, smoothly, and efficiently this whole transaction went. Naniq is quickly becoming our go-to for freight. We’ll run quotes through you on non-pallet rate domestic shipments as well, and see if we can send more your way.
Thanks very much, have a great Holiday!
Judd”

Ray Donahue, our Executive Vice President, recently made the following statement:

“I would like to recognize the extraordinary efforts of Ms. Bernie Kahele, from our HNL office. We handled a highly visible and important shipment for one of our Clients, going to the US Government. Due to recent Pacific storms, the rotation of vessels has been pushed a bit out of shape and the normal day & time of arrivals had been delayed. We were awarded this sea freight shipment over a number of forwarders because we convinced our Client to also provide an Ocean Freight solution along with an air freight solution, knowing that we had a better chance of winning, considering the competition, and the vessel arrival in Honolulu would be adequate to make the Required Delivery Date (RDD). We did not take in the full effect that the storms had on the vessel rotation times, and the shipment arrived late in the day, in fact after hours, on the RDD. Bernie was able to work with the carrier operations staff to divert gantry cranes to our container location and off-load our shipment well before it was scheduled to be discharged! That is no easy task! We made the delivery to the US Government within the deadline! Of course, there were other people involved, and we thank all of them as well, but Bernie did a remarkable job, and I want to publicly thank her for a job well done”.
