Last month, Port of Anacortes Commissioners and key staff attended the Washington Public Ports Association (WPPA) 2026 Spring Meeting. This annual event brings together public ports from across Washington to share updates, discuss industry trends, and hear insights on key issues impacting ports and communities statewide.

Commissioners and staff had the opportunity to connect with peers from ports throughout the state and hear key updates on topics such as the maritime industry, aviation, economic development, environmental initiatives, and energy-related efforts. The meeting provided a critical opportunity to strengthen relationships across port districts and bring fresh insights back to strengthen the work we do for our communities.

Thank you to WPPA for organizing another great event focused on learning, collaboration, and strengthening partnerships across Washington’s port community!

On Monday, June 1, the Port of Anacortes, Washington Public Ports Association and Washington Maritime Federation hosted state legislators and industry advocates for an on-water tour of the Anacortes Working Waterfront. There is no better way to see the power and potential of a working waterfront than from the water itself!

The boat tour offered a firsthand look at the engine driving economic development and jobs in our community, focusing on maritime transportation, our industrial waterfront, critical shipyard infrastructure, and commercial fishing. Connecting legislators and advocates directly to our working waterfront builds the understanding needed to champion our Port and community at the state level — keeping our waterfront working and our community thriving for years to come.

A huge thank you to Rep. Julia Reed, Rep. Sam Low, Rep. Alex Ramel, Sen. Liz Lovelett, and our partners at HF Sinclair Puget Sound Refinery, Dakota Creek Industries, Northwest Marine Trade Association (NMTA), Stabbert Marine and Industrial, and NW Center of Excellence for Marine Manufacturing and Technology for joining us. We appreciate their time, engagement, and commitment to our region.

The Port of Anacortes and the City of Anacortes are teaming up to strengthen maritime safety in our local waters. Through a recently signed Interlocal Agreement with the City, the Port will grant license for the Anacortes Police Department (APD) vessel to moor at Cap Sante Marina.

In exchange for moorage, APD will provide annual training to Port security staff, supporting the professional development of our team. This is a win-win for the City and Port: giving law enforcement a key location to respond quickly to maritime safety and law enforcement calls, while supporting the Port staff through emergency response trainings.

This partnership is a great example of what our Port and City can accomplish when we work together toward our shared goals.

Clean Ports partner spotlight: Stabbert Marine and Industrial has announced they will build a submersible barge right here in Anacortes.

On Thursday, April 2, Stabbert presented an update on their amended project plan to the Port of Anacortes Commission. Instead of using $11 million of their EPA Clean Ports Grant funding to purchase a travel lift built in Wisconsin, Stabbert has pivoted and decided to keep that money local for the submersible barge project.

“This EPA grant funding enables us to implement our long-term vision for the old Lovric’s Marina,” said Bryan Nichols, Stabbert’s Vice President of Technical Sales and Business Development. “By manufacturing this custom submersible barge here instead of purchasing a travel lift from out of state, we are accelerating that goal and bringing more jobs to our community, sooner.”
