Generally open from January until March, when the ice reaches a thickness of at least 12 inches. Pilots are advised to call 603-271-7398 for the most recent airport conditions. In warmer months, seaplanes are welcome on the bay and the town is working on some ideas to provide docking so that pilots can access the shoreline businesses.

Good afternoon. Now that we have closed the Airport Runway down for the season. Just wanted to post that we plowed a 120 x120’ area for anyone who would like to ice skate and play hockey. We thank you all for a fantastic season. Enjoy.😊

March 3rd 2026 - The announcement that Paul and I hate to make . . . the 2026 Ice Runway season has come to an end. It has been an amazing year with a record breaking number of landings, a lot a familiar faces and a lot of first timers. We all couldn't be happier with the season and we look forward to next year!

March 2nd 2026 - A very exciting day on the Ice Runway! We hit a milestone that we did not think was possible. At 1547 the crew was on hand to cheer on the 1000 landing on the runway for the 2026 season! Michael and Maggie flew in from Hampton (7B3) in N8961V. Paul and I presented them with an Ice Runway gift basket to commemorate the achievement! We ended the day with 84 landings for the day with a total of 1011 for the season!

March 2, 2026 Update - This morning we did a thorough runway surface inspection and found conditions are very good for today! You will notice in the picture that the ice is very smooth but right now the ice is cold and provides a little traction. Later in the day as the temperature rises traction will reduce. At about 1000-ft down the runway there is a rough area to be on the look out for.

March 1, 2026 Update - The Ice. Runway will remain closed today. During a review of the runway this morning we found areas on center line where there water had pooled and it was not cold enough to freeze solid. We decided to stay off the runway to allow it freeze today and tonight and we will reopen tomorrow March 2nd at 0800. All of us at the Ice Runway hope you have a relaxing Sunday!

Saturday February 28, 2026 Update - Due to a strong breeze from the south and the warmer temperatures causing a little surfacing melting of the ice, Alton Bay Ice Runway will be closed for the day. We will re-evaluate the ice conditions as well as weather conditions tomorrow (Mar 1st) and determine if we can be open tomorrow. Thank you all and have a great day!

February 27, 2026 Update - We had another great day! 62 landings for the day bringing the season total to 921! The weekend weather looks questionable with warm weather and winds from the south for Saturday and then snow for Sunday so we are unsure when we will be open or for how long. You can call 603.271.7398 for updates on runway conditions as they change.

February 23, 2026 Update - Good afternoon, we have had a fairly significant storm over the past 24 hours that has only recently ended. Due to the timing of the storm we will likely not be able to start to plow until later tomorrow, which will mean that it might not be finished until mid-day on Wednesday 25th. We will be sure to keep everyone updated as to how we are progressing!

Have a good afternoon and Stay Safe!

One of the many amazing things about the Alton Bay Ice Runway is the people we get to meet, both those who come by aircraft and those who come by car. We have had the opportunity to establish friendships with people from literally all over the world, and they are lasting friendships.

Recently one of the Ice Runway crew members had a family medical emergency, in the southern portion of the country and there were no commercial flights available that would get our crew member there in time. One of the pilots who is a regular to B18 heard about the situation and made themselves and their aircraft available to fly our crew member to their destination in the fastest possible time. It is those individuals that make Alton Bay so much more than just a winter novelty.

Thank you to all of the visitors to Alton Bay Ice Runway, regardless of how you arrive, it's all of you who make B18 the greatest location.
