Almost every haul starts and finishes at a loading dock. Even though drivers spend most of their time on the open road, navigating loading docks is a massive part of the job. Because these areas are fast-paced and high-traffic, staying safe and organized during loading and unloading is essential.

Here are four key etiquette and safety tips every driver should keep in mind for a smooth experience:

📋 Organize Your Paperwork
Keep all your documents in one dedicated place before you arrive. Having your paperwork ready saves valuable time, makes the dock crew's job easier, and reflects professionally on the company you represent.

👀 Be Alert and Focused
Backing a big rig into a tight or unfamiliar space is no easy task. Park outside first if needed and inspect the layout. Stay completely aware of your surroundings throughout the entire loading process—distractions are the main cause of preventable accidents.

📜 Follow the Rules
Every facility has its own safety protocols. Even if a rule seems unnecessary, it’s there for everyone’s protection. Trying to cut corners usually causes delays rather than saving time. Following dock guidelines shows professionalism and keeps operations running smoothly.

💬 Prioritize Communication and Patience
Transitioning from solitary driving to a busy team environment requires patience. Communicate clearly, politely, and promptly—especially if you're delayed or need to pass along updates. A calm, respectful approach keeps stress low and gets you back on the road faster.

Detroit is going all-in on its new Gen 6 DD13 and DD15 platforms starting January 2027. Unlike other engine builders that plan to keep legacy platforms around during the emissions transition, Detroit is completely switching over its heavy-duty lineup to fully EPA27-compliant powerplants from day one.

🔥 Faster Warm-Ups & Fewer Parked Regens: A new pre-SCR system injects DEF upstream closer to the exhaust heat, helping the engine hit operating temperature faster on cold starts and significantly reducing the need for parked regenerations.

🔧 No Complex 48-Volt System: Strict EPA27 emissions standards (80% lower NOx and 50% lower particulate limits) were met without adding complex, high-voltage electrical setups—keeping hardware simpler and lowering downtime risks.

💰 3% Lower Total Cost of Ownership: Operational efficiency improvements deliver an estimated 3% TCO advantage, helping cut overall running costs.

🚛 No Half-Measures: Detroit is skipping non-conformance penalties and dual-production schemes to focus entirely on the new Gen 6 platform right out of the gate.

Your cab might double as your office, dining room, and living room, but that truck stop break is a whole ritual of its own. ☕️🥪

Some drivers can’t hit the road again without a fresh hot coffee, some go straight for their favorite snacks, and others just need a cold drink to reset for the next leg of the route.

High temperatures are one of the biggest causes of unexpected mechanical failures on long hauls. Heat accelerates internal wear and puts immense stress on your truck’s most vital systems - from tires to engine cooling.

Here is a quick checklist to keep your equipment running smoothly during peak summer days:

⚡ 1. Monitor Tire Pressure & Tread Daily
As ambient heat rises, air pressure inside tires expands. Already underinflated, worn, or overloaded tires face a much higher risk of sudden blowouts on hot asphalt. Always perform pressure checks before hitting the road.

⚡ 2. Check Your Cooling System & Fluids
Under sustained high heat, coolant levels drop and engine fluids break down faster. Inspect your radiator, hoses, and coolant levels before departure, and keep an eye on temperature gauges during long climbs.

⚡ 3. Keep an Eye on the Battery
Heat speeds up internal chemical breakdown in batteries. If your battery is older, high summer temperatures can trigger an unexpected failure.

⚡ 4. Protect Temperature-Sensitive Freight
If you're hauling re**er or heat-sensitive freight, double-check trailer refrigeration units before departure and monitor temperatures consistently during transit.

A thorough pre-trip inspection takes minutes, but it can save you hours of downtime! Drive safe out there. 🛠️ Check your equipment, protect your load!
