As of yesterday, the FAA's Instrument Flight Procedures group canceled our VOR 22 instrument approach for Alexandria.

We know this is a popular approach for students working on Instrument ratings, flight schools, and even the Army National Guard. Not only that, but it had become one of the few VOR approaches left in the state with published DME Arcs attached to it - making it a valuable training resource.

While the FAA has committed to maintaining the Alexandria VOR long-term, the decision to remove the associated instrument approach is baffling. We've expressed our concerns to the FAA and appreciate those of you who have as well. We are still fighting to reinstate this approach.

In the meantime, we have attached a photo of the most recent amendment of the VOR 22 approach for your viewing pleasure. Should anyone be interested in a PDF version - you can email [email protected].

Ever wondered what it takes to become a pilot?

Introduction to the Private Pilot’s License gives you a front-seat look at the world of aviation. Designed for ages 13+, this ground school class covers the essentials pilots use every day. From aerodynamics and weather to airspace, regulations, and what real flight training is like. The knowledge you will have when you walk away from this course would cost about $550 with a private instructor.

Perfect for teens dreaming of the cockpit or adults curious about flying!

On the topic of scholarships, did you know there's many local and regional scholarship opportunities for individuals learning how to fly?

In Alexandria alone we are fortunate to have the Newton Earl Memorial Scholarship through the Vietnam Veterans of America West Central Chapter. Our local EAA - The Spirit of Aviation Chapter 702 also has a Ray Aviation scholarship most years.

Regionally, aviation organizations such as Minnesota Aviation Trades Association, Minnesota Business Aviation Association, Minnesota Council of Airports, Minnesota Pilots Association, Minnesota Aviation Hall of Fame and more have annual Scholarship opportunities.

Logan, our high school intern this spring, set up a Scholarship table at our facility where students can look through and grab scholarship applications when they are out here taking lessons.

Students - make sure to take advantage of these!
