🥀 I made it a professional goal to exhibit at a conference this year. It didn’t happen.

☠️ I recently asked for orders for sodium bicarbonate for a patient with severe metabolic acidosis. The baby’s sodium level was above 155 mEq/L. FML.

🥀 I’ve been working on a new product for TWO YEARS and I can’t motivate myself to finish it even though I’m getting close.

☠️ My last 3 PICC placement attempts have been unsuccessful. It’s been incredibly demoralizing to me and my self-esteem, to the point where I want to quit doing PICC lines.

🥀 My views for the last 30 days are the lowest they’ve ever been, in part because I’m burned out on social media.

TW: death & dying in the NICU
I’ve been a nurse for over 15 years, and almost all of that time has been spent in the NICU. Accompanying patients and families through dying hasn’t gotten easier I’ve gotten more experienced. Even though it’s a privilege to be with babies and their families in these moments, it’s still just as sad and devastating to me as the first death that I ever saw.

I wrote this poem when I was trying to process a patient death earlier this year. It’s lived in my phone since then. I’m definitely not a poet, but recently I felt compelled to share it in the hopes that other clinicians like me will feel less alone. 💜🤍

October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.

This month, we remember and honor babies who were lost too soon, and the families who we have the privilege of accompanying through grief as clinicians.

💕 In the USA, 1 out of every 175 pregnancies ends in stillbirth.
🤍 Every year in the United States, over 20,000 babies die before their 1st birthday.
💕 Stillbirth and infant loss disproportionately impact Black birthing persons & babies.
🤍 In the USA, the leading causes of infant death are:
1. Birth defects
2. Low birthweight
3. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
4. Unintentional injuries
5. Pregnancy complications

Really wish the healthcare system could figure out respite care for clinicians on shift who experience traumatic events on the clock, because it’s WILD to have to endure that and continue through the rest of a shift like nothing bad happened.
