DARTS MPO Dougherty Area Regional Transportation Study Metropolitan Planning Organization

DARTS supports a safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation system by ensuring that federal-aid transportation projects are planned in a continuous, coordinated and comprehensive manner. The DARTS, the designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), study area includes the existing urbanized area for the City of Albany, Dougherty County, and the southern half of Lee County, and those are

as that are expected to become urbanized over the next 20 years. The DARTS planning process was mandated by the 1962 Highway Act which requires that a transportation planning process be established in all metropolitan areas with a population greater than 50,000. Before federal funds can be expended on a project in the DARTS study area, the project must be included in the DARTS planning process. The DARTS MPO is composed of elected, appointed, and advisory officials from the federal, state, and local levels which are organized into three committees: two advisory committees (the Technical Coordinating Committee and Citizens’ Transportation Committee) and a decision-making committee (Policy Committee). Planning and Community Development Services provides local staff support for the Dougherty Area Regional Transportation Study (DARTS).

Cool 360 camera cover photo is courtesy of Gage Cleveland, CDM Smith. It's a recent photo of the Oglethorpe Blvd bridge in downtown Albany. Shot from the east end of the bridge. At that time beams had been installed only on that one span. This photo shows some of the other bridge columns and caps (the horizontal piece) from the east end looking towards downtown Gage will be shooting more photos and we'll share those with you, too. Dougherty Co: on Sat. we told you about SR 133 traffic moving to a new alignment this week (see the Jan. 24 post in the feed below). Due to that traffic shift motorists won't be able to access Spring Flats Road from SR 133. Starting tomorrow, Jan. 27, there will be a detour staged starting at South County Line Road. Detour signs and message boards will be present to show drivers how to access Spring Flats Road and we've posted the detour map here. It is estimated that the detour will be in place until the beginning of April.
