Marine growth occurs on the bottom of boats in the water. It gets worse the longer the boat sits in the water. Smaller boats utilize lifts to keep them from resting in the water, but most larger boats reside in the water. How can you protect your hull? Bottom paint.

Bottom paint provides protection for your hull from marine growth. A clean, painted hull can increase speed by approximately 10 miles per hour. Failure to paint can cause additional damage and unnecessary expenses, reduce fuel consumption, and drag, not to mention reduced performance. This occurs because your bottom is porous. Algae gets into tiny openings and grows which allows water to be absorbed into the hull causing blisters. As time progresses, your boat gets more and larger blisters which cost a lot of money to repair.

How often does your boat bottom need to be painted? There are a wide variety of opinions and factors to answer this question, but the rule of thumb is every two to three years.

What happens if you don’t paint your hull often enough? Everyone agrees that damage to the hull of your boat is inevitable.

Vail’s Marine Service operates the largest Travel Lift on the lake. Give us a call to schedule your bottom job or for additional information at 918-782-3201 extension 300. You will be having a hull of a time before you know it.

A Marine TravelLift is a specialized hoist used for lifting boats out of the water and transporting them around marinas. They have two rectangular frames which are joined by a beam. The lift is mobile with steerable wheels at each corner. Boats are lifted by using straps, which are attached on the two sides and pass under the boat either in the water or on a boat stand. Cables on winches are used to lift the straps after the boat is positioned correctly, thus lifting the boat.
The largest Marine TravelLift resides at Scissortail Marina and is leased by Vail’s Marine Service. It can lift up to 50 metric tons and haul vessels from 25 feet to 100 feet in length. It is designed to lift a variety of vessels such as power boats, sailboats, yachts, catamarans, fishing boats. It has a wireless remote which allows the operator better visibility of your boat when in operation. The mechanics at Vails Marine Service have over 20 years of boat repair experience, along with certifications, integrity, character, and excellence.
Fall/Winter is the best time for a bottom job. Don’t rock the boat, give us a call at 918-782-3201 extension 300 to schedule your boat’s bottom job. She will thank you.

Gene Matthews

Gene lived in three countries, seven states, and ten cities, then his job was outsourced. So, in 1993 Gene started a company which facilitated his love of boating by purchasing a 50’ Trojan which he named Voice Tell to represent his company. He and his son were hooked. They were water ski junkies rising early to get the smooth water. This love was passed on to his grandson. Gene and his son have slips next to each other at Scissortail Marina, and grandson Maddox worked as a dock hand.

Gene had an intermittent problem with his current boat a 51’ Blue Water. Vail’s Marine Service was new at Scissortail Marina and Gene decided to give them a try. Vail’s spent quality time with the Blue Water in order to replicate the problem. Gene was impressed by how knowledgeable they are.

Vail’s has become Gene’s go-to boat mechanic because they provide “good, reliable service and they do what they say they are going to do.” Gene said he is “totally satisfied” with Vail’s Marine Service.

Have a fantastic weekend.

Kevin, certified boat mechanic, is winterizing a boat due to the recent cold snap.

Kevin wants to remind boat owners to store your boat with a full-tank of gas that has stabilizer in it. This reduced the amount of moisture you get in your gas tank.

Trending Topic: Multiple Outboards

In 1907 the first outboard motors were invented by Ole Evinrude. Later there were two outboard engines on a boat which improved maneuverability, and now there are up to nine or more on one boat. It’s pretty easy to understand that two outboard engines improve performance, speed, and control, but why more?

More motors mean a faster boat, improved hole shot, better balance, and redundancy. There is less stress on a two-engine set up than on one. It is a way to power larger boats as a viable alternative to inboard engines. Most multiple outboard boats have joystick steering, which improves control. We can’t fail to mention that more motors are a head turner.

The cons of multiple outboards are reduced fuel efficiency; increased price, maintenance, and sound levels. Twin outboard motors can more than double the cost of powering your boat with a single engine.

I think a boat owner with six outboards on his transom summed it up nicely when was asked why he had six motors to which he responded, “because I can.”
