The Uganda Police Force has called on thousands of pilgrims expected to attend this year's Martyrs Day celebrations to strictly follow Ebola prevention guidelines as authorities work to prevent the spread of the disease.
Security officials say they have intensified surveillance and enforcement measures at major gathering points, particularly at the Namugongo Catholic and Anglican shrines, where large crowds are expected for the annual commemoration.
Police have advised pilgrims to maintain high standards of personal hygiene, regularly wash their hands, use sanitizers where available, and immediately report anyone showing symptoms associated with Ebola, including fever, vomiting, bleeding, severe weakness and unexplained body pain.
Authorities have also warned the public against spreading unverified information about the disease, urging citizens to rely on updates from the Ministry of Health and other official government channels.
Security agencies, health workers and event organizers have been deployed to ensure that health protocols are observed throughout the celebrations. Screening teams are expected to be stationed at key entry points, while emergency response units will remain on standby.
Martyrs Day is one of Uganda's largest annual religious gatherings, attracting tens of thousands of pilgrims from across the country and neighboring nations. This year's celebrations are taking place amid heightened public health vigilance following recent concerns about Ebola outbreaks in parts of the region.
Police have appealed for cooperation from all pilgrims, emphasizing that individual responsibility will be crucial in ensuring a safe and successful commemoration.
