Did you know that a hippopotamus can graze up to 45kg of grass in a single night? Despite spending most of their lives in water, hippos do not feed on aquatic vegetation. Instead, they leave the water at night to graze on grasslands using their wide and powerful muscular mouths.

During the dry season, large numbers of hippos congregate together in rivers and water pools. Male hippos are highly territorial and often display dominance by backing up and spraying urine and f***s to mark territory and communicate with rivals. Fierce fights are common, and their sharp tusks, which can grow up to 50cm long, leave deep scars on opponents.

Hippos also create grazing trails and territorial paths around water sources. Interestingly, hippo skin is extremely thin and lacks sweat glands, making them vulnerable to dehydration and overheating. This is why they spend most of the daytime submerged in water to stay cool and protect their skin from the hot African sun.
