Agriculture is Uganda's premier economic sector. Oil and gas will soon be more important contributors to the national revenue pool. Yet the population will still need to rely on agriculture to feed and clothe itself, to provide employment and to maintain the rural physical landscape. Government of Uganda is implementing a 5 year cluster development project financed by the World Bank to the tune of US$150 million. 39 districts across the whole country are covered under this project, with a focus on maize, rice, beans, cassava and coffee. We have participated in the design of this project as team member. More details are accessible here:

Many NGOs and governments try to develop chains that involve smallholders, to try and alleviate their poor living conditions. Designing VC development interventions requires multiple discipline teams and institutions in many cases. The collective capacity of these teams needs to be understood, how it can be maximised, most effectively utilised and even improved. Otherwise more harm than good could come out of poorly designed value chain interventions. We have more analysis here.

Some of our work in the forestry sector involves promotion of indigenous tree species and protecting their natural forest setting. The challenges in commercialising natural forest resources without depleting them is enormous. Some options include utilisation for medicinal purposes as well as construction of timber and log houses using material from naturally aged trees. But of course there is tourism sector, perfect for natural forest setting if the high level of investment finance can be obtained.

Fresh produce such as dessert bananas, need cool storage and appropriate handling facilities as they deteriorate fast after ripening and have delicate skin that damages easily during handling and transportation. These attributes make banana one of the fastest traded goods in the market, decisions are made in a flash of a second. We recognise this and provide cool storage and spacious handing facilities for fresh produce. Our facility is located at Bwebajja within the Kajjansi Junction Project area.

Access is easy to and from all corners of Uganda via the main highways and connecting to the Entebbe Expressway from the junctions at Bweyogerere (eastern Uganda and Kenya and Tanzania), Kaleerwe and Bwaise (for northern corridor and south sudan), and Busega (for western Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and DRC). It takes 15 minutes to reach Entebbe Airport from where we are.

We have done this for some time now, as research shows in articles such as this one below.

Most fresh produce is traded by volume in Africa. It should be traded by weight to improve transparency and ethics in trade. We have done some work in collaboration with partners although much more is still required.
