According to Juan Manuel del Rey, president of the Spanish Tablao Association, tablaos employ 95% of the flamenco dancers in Spain. Before the pandemic, the country's 50,000 yearly shows accounted for all but 5% of the world's flamenco performances. Without tablaos, flamenco is losing its stage to the world.

Flamenco's trifecta of guitar music, vocals and dance ranks among Spain's most famous art forms. But in the country of its birth, this centuries-old craft that unites elegant physicality and raw human emotion is in danger of extinction.

Spain's tablaos – traditional flamenco venues named after the wooden platforms upon which performers spin, sing and strum – were particularly hard-hit by pandemic lockdown restrictions. In tablaos, spectators rub shoulders at tightly spaced tables and performers remain close enough to maintain an electric connection to their audience, one that encourages improvisation and turns flamenco into a nearly collaborative act.

The tunnel followed a public footpath along the Anghidi River towards Tintern Abbey, the 12th-Century abbey built by Cistercian monks whose ruins are visited by thousands each year.

It didn't appear on any Ordnance Survey map, but when technicians in the Wye Valley near Wales' famed Tintern Abbey were called to remove an electrical pole, they discovered something unexpected.

Allyn Gore, the technician for Western Power Distribution working on the project, said, "I had a phone call about two hours into the work … they said, 'Allyn, we've found a cave.'" The digging had revealed a small opening tucked beneath a cluster of rocks and nearly obscured by vines.

Klinkenbergh's life changed in 2007 when she saw a picture of an ornate geometric crop circle. "Having a background in art, I failed to understand how 13-fold geometry could appear in a cornfield in such a short time span, in darkness, on uneven terrain and unnoticed," she said. "The more I learnt about the phenomenon, the more I was amazed. Credible people were witnessing incredible things." The intricacy and size of the formations, coupled with the fact that they would appear overnight, seemingly out of nowhere, baffled locals and farmers alike. In 1996, a crop circle appeared opposite Stonehenge depicting a mathematical fractal called a Julia set; a similar formation that emerged on Milk Hill in 2001 was one of the largest ever, stretching 900ft. Ears of wheat prickled my shins and the sun beat down on my neck as I trudged through the tractor lines of a golden field on Wiltshire's Hackpen Hill. It was August – the height of crop circle season – and I'd been directed here by frenzied online reports of a new formation, which had appeared, as they are wont to do, overnight; apparently unseen by observers. From the ground, I could make out nothing but intersecting lines of trampled wheat – but photographed from above the pattern resembled a crosshair.
