Elegant, elusive, and impossible to mistake, the Greater Kudu is one of Africa’s most striking antelopes. Its tall frame, fine white body stripes, and the male’s dramatic spiral horns make every sighting feel rare -and in East Africa, it truly is.

In this region, sightings are far less common than in Southern Africa, and in Tanzania, Ruaha National Park is widely regarded as the strongest location for seeing them, while Tarangire may still offer occasional sightings, though at much lower density.

What makes the Greater Kudu so captivating is not only its appearance, but its presence. It favours thorny savannah, bushland, wooded hills, and rocky escarpments, and it often moves with quiet caution, relying on camouflage before suddenly bounding away. Despite its size, it is known to freeze first and then escape with astonishing leaps that can reach around 3 metres high.

The species is also beautifully distinct in form: males are substantially heavier than females, and only the males carry those iconic twisted horns. In East Africa, the subspecies present is the Northern Greater Kudu, which is generally described as leaner and smaller than the larger southern forms.

For photographers and wildlife lovers, the Greater Kudu is not just another antelope sighting - it is one of those rarer, more rewarding encounters that gives the Tanzanian wilderness its depth.
