宜蘭車站位於宜蘭線八堵站起點71.3公里，距台北站95.9公里，花蓮站98.1公里，為北迴鐵路中點站，本站創於民國7年，原為木造二層站房，民國51（1962）遭歐珀（Opal）颱風侵襲倒塌
經改建為鋼筋混凝土建築物，於民國51年落成啟用，民國85年站房門面及廣場重新整修為現今雄偉外觀，為配合宜蘭地方為發展東鄰地區於民國85年興建後站，86年06月19日落成啟用，便利東鄰地區旅客進出車站。
民國93年2月1日四城站降等納入管轄。
民國101年增設無障礙昇降電梯3部，貫穿前後站及第2月台，天橋長度57公尺。
