民國34年高雄市成為省轄市，隸屬於台灣省。民國35年起下轄鹽埕、鼓山、左營、楠梓、三民、新興、前金、連雅（民國41年更名為「苓雅」）、前鎮與旗津等10區。民國64年高雄市成為台北市之後第二個人口超過百萬的台灣都市，中華民國政府考慮平衡南北發展，於民國68年7月1日起，高雄市升格為台灣的第二個直轄市，並將高雄縣小港鄉併入高雄市改為小港區。
