When "Care, Share, Together" Becomes a Universal Language
The 2025 Terra Madre Asia & Pacific in the Philippines has successfully concluded. This was our first visit to Negros Island, and from the very first welcome dinner, we were struck by the strategic ambition of the local government to fuse "Slow Food" with "Tourism." With the Department of Tourism Secretary acting as a charismatic ambassador under the spotlight, and Slow Food HQ establishing its Asia Pacific hub here, Bacolod is declaring its goal to become an iconic "Slow Food City" with the full force of the island behind it.
Over five days, we witnessed the vitality of traditional crafts and local farmers. The most memorable image for me was seeing chefs boldly using raw salt blocks in their cooking—a return to the essence of ingredients that perfectly embodies the Slow Food spirit.
Reflecting on Taiwan, our Indigenous Slow Food movement has deepened its roots over the last decade. We haven’t just practiced the core tenets of "Good, Clean, Fair"; we have grown our own Indigenous values from the land: "Care, Share, Together." This is not just a slogan; it is an extension of our local culture.
The highlight came when Edie from Slow Food HQ in Italy took the stage and said, "Thank you, Taiwan. We care together and share together, just as you say: Care, Share, Together." In that moment, I knew that Taiwan’s Indigenous Slow Food values had become a shared language connecting partners across the Asia Pacific.
As a bridge between the government and international organizations, our mission is to bring these global issues back to Taiwan to take root. We must stop settling for the convenience of fast food culture and instead synchronize with the world tasting original flavors and experiencing deep culture.
We saw Bacolod become a Slow Food City. But we hope goes further: that one day, we can transcend one-off mega-events and truly nurture an "Indigenous Slow Food City" right here in Asia.
