Gathering Together to Walk a Longer Path 🔥
As the year draws to a close, the members of "the Taiwan indigenous Slow Food Cook's Alliance" have gathered once more. Tonight, the laughter echoing around the hearth allows us to momentarily set aside the burdens and worries of our busy lives.

This past year, we have each worked hard in our respective villages, weathering the trials brought upon our land. It is especially heartening to see our friends from Guangfu, joining us tonight. Having stood tall through the shadows of the floods, your presence makes our bond feel even closer. In this circle of ours, many words are unnecessary; a bowl of hot soup passed between hands or a simple exchange of glances serves as the most sincere comfort.

In this moment, "Slow Food" takes on a deeper meaning. It is the slow-simmered solace we offer one another as we face challenges together.

🌿 Our New Year Pact: Monthly Visits
Around the fire, we made a pact for the coming year: to start a monthly tradition of "dropping in" on one another. This connection should not just be about professional exchange; it is about stepping into each other’s kitchens and villages to share our food and the real, lived moments of our daily lives.

We want every partner to know that on this journey of preserving our culture, we are always together. Tonight’s gathering is about gathering strength, so that we may carry this warmth and walk steadily into a long and bright future.

(SFC-Amis Traditional Crop Cultivation and Seed Preservation in Hualien, Taiwan)

【From Soil to Soul: Replanting Our Amis Culture】

"To plant the seeds back is to plant our culture back." 🌱

“SFC-Amis Traditional Crop Cultivation and Seed Preservation in Hualien, Taiwan “is dedicated to the investigation and restoration of traditional Amis crops. For us, seed saving is not merely for production, but to inherit the wisdom and rituals of our elders. As our spokesperson Amid (Cheng Chen-yi) says, revitalizing crops allows our people to "breathe the same air" as the land, reconnecting with our cultural identity and strengthening our tribe's food sovereignty.
Through family collaboration, we transform traditional wisdom into contemporary practice:
🌾 Guardian of Ancient Rice & Hunter | Huang Jun-long (Uncle-in-law) Both a hunter and a farmer, he insists on cultivating endangered ancient Amis rice. These traditional crops possess powerful climate resilience, displaying vitality even in the face of disaster. Upholding the hunter’s philosophy of "taking only what is needed," he ensures that seeds do not just live in jars, but thrive in the soil and on our dining tables.
🍷 Weaver & Winemaker | Chen Mei-lan (Aunt) She is the force transforming nature into living culture. Inheriting the complex artistry of Amis winemaking, she uses foraged plants to create traditional starters (amis call“tamod”), retrieving the "liquid soul" of tribal rituals and the path connecting to ancestral spirits. Simultaneously, she weaves yellow rattan into daily implements, sustaining a material culture that flows "from soil to life."
From ancient rice farming and hunter philosophies to fermentation craftsmanship, we connect the powerful resilience and agency of Amis culture in the face of climate change.

When "Care, Share, Together" Becomes a Universal Language

The 2025 Terra Madre Asia & Pacific in the Philippines has successfully concluded. This was our first visit to Negros Island, and from the very first welcome dinner, we were struck by the strategic ambition of the local government to fuse "Slow Food" with "Tourism." With the Department of Tourism Secretary acting as a charismatic ambassador under the spotlight, and Slow Food HQ establishing its Asia Pacific hub here, Bacolod is declaring its goal to become an iconic "Slow Food City" with the full force of the island behind it.

Over five days, we witnessed the vitality of traditional crafts and local farmers. The most memorable image for me was seeing chefs boldly using raw salt blocks in their cooking—a return to the essence of ingredients that perfectly embodies the Slow Food spirit.
Reflecting on Taiwan, our Indigenous Slow Food movement has deepened its roots over the last decade. We haven’t just practiced the core tenets of "Good, Clean, Fair"; we have grown our own Indigenous values from the land: "Care, Share, Together." This is not just a slogan; it is an extension of our local culture.

The highlight came when Edie from Slow Food HQ in Italy took the stage and said, "Thank you, Taiwan. We care together and share together, just as you say: Care, Share, Together." In that moment, I knew that Taiwan’s Indigenous Slow Food values had become a shared language connecting partners across the Asia Pacific.

As a bridge between the government and international organizations, our mission is to bring these global issues back to Taiwan to take root. We must stop settling for the convenience of fast food culture and instead synchronize with the world tasting original flavors and experiencing deep culture.
We saw Bacolod become a Slow Food City. But we hope goes further: that one day, we can transcend one-off mega-events and truly nurture an "Indigenous Slow Food City" right here in Asia.

Care
Share
Together

Today marked the final two sessions of the 2025 Terra Madre Asia & Pacific, and the sense of emotion in the room ran deeper and lingered longer than expected.

Amid, founder of the Amis Traditional Crop Revitalization and Seed Preservation initiative, shared the ongoing work in Matai’an. He said:
“What we are reviving is not only traditional crops, but the act of planting our culture back into the land, breathing the same air as these plants.”
The words felt like a key—guiding everyone back to the land, back to the true source of culture.
In this light, “revitalization” is not about looking backward; it is about allowing culture to live again in the rhythms of everyday life.

Another session was led by Lengos from the Indigenous Slow Food Cooking Alliance, sharing the making of fermented black beans. Before the demonstration began, the group offered a rendition of the dipping-song Tenas in the Amis language.
As the singing began, movement, breath, and the aroma of food blended into a pure expression of Amis vitality—
not a performance, but a gentle and natural passing-on of culture.

These two sessions were a reminder that culture is not something to be displayed—
culture is lived.
It grows in the land, in the grains, in the echo of songs, and in the flavors carried on the tongue.
And this is the very strength that Slow Food seeks to honor:
Care for the land and for one another,
Share food and stories,
Together move forward under the same sky.
Today’s emotions made “continuity” not just an idea, but a direction that everyone is willing to walk toward and protect.

三個石頭彼此依靠,才能撐起一鍋共享的食物;

Care、Share、Together——

Today’s gathering felt like family returning to the same ancestral house.
The journey of Asia-Pacific Indigenous Slow Food over the past years was retold by voices from different peoples, islands, mountains, and seas—
a sharing among family, carrying the weight of land and the glow of living culture.
The Amis three-stone stove (parod) naturally became a shared language in the room.
Three stones leaning on one another to hold a single pot of food—
just like Care, Share, Together:
without one, the taste of home would not be complete.
In the final moment of songs and circle dancing, we all felt it—
it was not just Hualien, not just the Asia-Pacific,
but one Austronesian home
gently pulling us closer.
The fire remained, the warmth of the dance stayed with us,
and together, we will keep this pot simmering—longer, deeper, and sweeter.
“We will meet again; we will keep walking together.”
Care, Share, Together—
this circle is always open, always continuing.

[Slow Food Frontline Report]

The Atomo community in Guangfu Township is facing the severe challenge brought by the overflow of the Mataian Creek barrier lake. On September 23 at 2:50 p.m., heavy rainfall triggered the overflow upstream, sending floodwaters mixed with sediment rushing downstream, destroying embankments and bridges, and inundating towns and villages.

Atomo has suffered greatly: torrents quickly swept into the settlement, submerging many homes in mud and water, and disrupting daily life. According to community and media reports, local youth and residents have voluntarily joined cleanup efforts, hoping to restore normalcy as soon as possible.

In response, the Indigenous Chefs’ Alliance and Slow Food Travel organizations joined forces to launch community kitchens, providing not only hot meals but also a sense of solidarity. The fire and aroma became the warmest source of comfort after the disaster, rekindling hope as neighbors stood together.

🌿🌏 A Slow Food Calling: 11 travelers, 1 shared journey — Hualien, we did it!

Across oceans and borders, a gentle call once echoed —
A call made not with noise, but with care, with stories, with flavors.

And in June, 11 delegates from 9 countries answered that call.
They came to Hualien, Taiwan, bringing not just ingredients, but intentions — to listen, to learn, to share, and to grow with us.

Guided by the spirit of Care, Share, Together, they stepped into our communities, sat at our tables, and wove their stories into ours.

👣 Meet our unforgettable Slow Food companions:

🇺🇸 Carly (Hawaii)
🇲🇽 Gladys (Mexico)
🇹🇭 Uraiwan (Thailand)
🇭🇰 Adele (Hong Kong)
🇯🇵 Chiaki & Saki (Ryukyu)
🇰🇷 Haeyoung & Jinyoung (Korea)
🇮🇩 Pratama (Indonesia)
🇵🇭 🇺🇸Alexander (Philippines)(USA)
🇵🇪 Frank (Peru)

In fields and kitchens, forests and gatherings,
they shared more than knowledge —
they offered laughter, care, and the courage to imagine a slower, more connected future.

🌸 Thank you for coming all this way.
🌸 Thank you, Hualien, for welcoming the world with such warmth.

This is not the end — it's only the beginning.
