Turtles and their eggs are often targeted by poachers around the world for their meat as well as for harvesting their carapaces (shells).

However, in T&T, The Protection of Turtle and Turtle Eggs explicitly prohibit the killing, harpooning, or possession of turtles, as well as the collection or sale of their eggs. Offenders face substantial fines for each offense of poaching, trafficking, or consumption.

Today, we highlight the Olive Ridley sea turtle, the second smallest of the world’s seven sea turtle species. While Olive Ridleys are seldom seen in T&T, they are known for their spectacular synchronised mass-nestings, called “arribadas”. Olive ridleys are known for their heart-shaped, olive-green to grayish shell, and can reach a weight of up to 45 kg.

T&T successfully rehabilitated and released a distressed Olive Ridley sea turtle in 2024.

Turtle tourism is important but it must be responsible.

Responsible turtle tourism allows us to experience the wonder of these magnificent creatures without disturbing them or damaging their habitat.

In Trinidad and Tobago, turtle tours follow a hands-off approach. Sea turtles are wild animals, and keeping a safe distance helps protect both them and us. It also reduces the risk of disease transmission and allows turtles to behave naturally in their environment.

Let's do our part to keep our wildlife wild, safe, and thriving for generations to come.

A UNCTAD and UN-ECLAC delegation was in Trinidad and Tobago recently for a mission focused on trade policy and food supply chain logistics.

Once their formal engagements concluded, we ensured that they had a chance to see what else our country had to offer. This included a trip to Maracas Beach for a local food experience and a visit to the Caroni Bird Sanctuary.

It was a good opportunity to showcase a different side of the island once the work was finished.

Sea turtles are gentle, ancient mariners perfectly adapted to life in the open ocean. They traverse the globe and can be found in every ocean basin on Earth—except the icy waters of the Arctic!

Of the seven species of sea turtles found globally, we are incredibly fortunate that five of them regularly visit Trinidad & Tobago to nest. These species include the Leatherback, Green, Hawksbill, Loggerhead, and Olive Ridley.

Every year, leatherback turtles come ashore on select beaches to nest.

It is one of the most significant wildlife events in the region, with these turtles travelling long distances across the Atlantic to return to the same beaches where they were born.

Leatherbacks are the largest of all sea turtles and play an important role in marine ecosystems. Their nesting sites in Trinidad are critical to their survival as a species.

We’ve highlighted five key facts about leatherback turtles and why they matter to Trinidad’s natural heritage. Have you ever witnessed a nesting or hatching season in Trinidad? What's on your top five moments?

Today is World Ocean Day! 🌊

Sea turtles are true global citizens, traveling across entire oceans without a passport. They remind us that the ocean has no borders.

Yet, no matter how far they roam, their journeys always bring them back to the beaches of T&T. This means the turtles nesting and foraging here aren't just ours—they belong to the world. It makes our dedicated local conservation work a mission of global importance.

We all have a role to play. Let’s commit to reducing litter, especially in our coastal areas, and speaking out against marine pollution. Together, we can keep our oceans clean! 🐢💙
